“Who Let You In?”

“Who the hell let you trespass into this neighborhood, you low-life punk?”

The words struck harder than Harrison Noble expected.

He stood on the front porch of his newly purchased home, a heavy cardboard box balanced against his chest.

For a moment, he simply stared at the woman standing across the property line.

She was dressed impeccably.

Cream blouse.

Pressed trousers.

Pearls around her neck.

A phone already clutched in one hand.

Her name was Donna Prescott.

Harrison didn't know that yet.

He only knew she was angry.

“Ma'am,” he said calmly, “I just purchased this home.”

“Purchased?”

Donna laughed.

Then she kicked a plastic bag sitting beside the porch.

The bag tore.

Clothes spilled across the concrete.

“Drug money?” she asked. “Food stamps?”

Harrison's jaw tightened.

“Excuse me?”

“I've seen your kind before.”

Behind him, the front door remained open.

Inside, his wife Celeste was arranging boxes.

They had spent years saving for this house.

They had imagined this morning differently.

They had imagined sunlight, music, coffee, and the excitement of finally having a place that belonged to them.

Instead, they had Donna Prescott.

She pulled out her phone.

“I'm calling the police.”

Harrison looked at the phone.

Then at her.

“You don't need to do that.”

“Oh, I absolutely do.”

Her thumb moved across the screen.

“I want you gone from this street by sundown.”

She pressed the call button.

Harrison didn't argue.

He simply bent down and began picking up the clothes she had scattered.

What Donna didn't know was that this would not be the last time she called the police on the Noble family.

It would be the first of twelve calls.

And the twelfth would change everything.

The House on Brierwood Lane

The story had actually begun earlier that morning.

At 7:15 a.m., a gray Ford Explorer rolled into the driveway of 1042 Brierwood Lane.

Harrison stepped out and stretched his back.

The house was beautiful.

Two stories.

White siding.

Black shutters.

A wide front porch.

And a massive magnolia tree that leaned over the front yard.
