The First Call
Harrison's first day as Cedarfield's new police chief began the following Monday.
He left home at 6:30 a.m.
No uniform.
No badge.
Just a plain shirt and dark trousers.
The city council had recruited him from a major department in Durham after Cedarfield's police administration had collapsed under a discrimination scandal.
They wanted someone with an impeccable record.
Someone who could rebuild trust.
Harrison Noble had twenty-six years of experience.
No major complaints.
No disciplinary history.
No scandals.
He was exactly the man Cedarfield needed.
But Donna Prescott didn't know any of that.
She hadn't read the newspaper article about the new chief.
She hadn't seen his photograph.
She only knew that a Black family had moved next door.
At 11:42 that morning, she called 911.
“Hello,” she said calmly. “I'd like to report suspicious activity.”
The dispatcher asked for details.
“There are unidentified people unloading property at 1042 Brierwood Lane.”
“Do you know who they are?”
“No.”
“Have you spoken with them?”
Donna paused.
“I'm not comfortable approaching them.”
Fourteen minutes later, Officer Kyle Brennan arrived.
Harrison was carrying a floor lamp.
He stopped when he saw the cruiser.
“Afternoon, sir.”
“Afternoon.”
“We received a suspicious activity call.”
Harrison nodded.
“We're moving into our home.”
“Do you have identification?”
Harrison handed him his driver's license.
Then he retrieved the closing documents.
Brennan examined everything.
His expression changed.
“This is your house.”
“Yes.”
Brennan sighed.
“I'm sorry about this.”
He handed back the papers.
“Welcome to the neighborhood.”
The cruiser drove away.
Donna immediately crossed the street.
“Don't think that's the end of this.”
Harrison said nothing.
“I have the HOA board. I know the city council. I have officers on speed dial.”
She pointed at him.
