You Ready, Roach?” The Arrogant Black Belt Humiliated the Quiet Janitor
Chapter 6
hit her like a freight train: he wasn't fighting her. He was managing a situation.
David slowly lifted his knee, removing the pressure from her throat, but
maintained a stabilizing grip on her shoulder to prevent her from retaliating out of
instinct. He stood up smoothly, extending his hand down to her.
The silence in the room was deafening. Elena looked at his offered hand, her mind
racing. Her ego screamed at her to slap it away, to jump up and attack him while his
guard was down. But the rational, martial artist part of her brain—the part that
understood combat kinematics and true power—knew it would be suicidal. She
realized, with a sickening drop in her stomach, that if he had wanted to kill her, she
would already be dead before she hit the floor.
Slowly, shakily, she reached up and took his hand. David hoisted her to her feet
with minimal effort. He didn't raise his arms in victory. He didn't look at the crowd. He
simply nodded to her, a gesture of basic human acknowledgment, and turned toward
the ropes.
"Wait," Elena choked out, her voice raspy. She coughed, clutching her ribs. "Who...
what are you?"
David paused at the edge of the ring. He didn't look back. "I'm the maintenance
supervisor, Ms. Rostova. The waiver is signed. My department keeps its budget."
He slipped through the ropes and walked out of the arena, his footsteps silent on
the hardwood floor. The heavy glass doors shut behind him, leaving a room full of
stunned, silent people.
In the aftermath, the gym descended into chaos. The trainers rushed to Elena,
checking her for injuries. Marcus waved them off, his eyes fixed on the door David
had just walked through. He walked over to Elena, who was sitting on a stool, staring
blankly at her hands.
"Are you okay?" Marcus asked quietly.
"He didn't even try," she whispered, the shock still vibrating in her voice. "He didn't
throw a single strike, Marcus. He just... dismantled me."
Marcus sighed heavily, pulling a towel over his shoulder. "Elena, I did four tours in
the Marines before I started fighting professionally. I know what that looked like. The
way he moved, the economy of motion, the threat assessment... That guy is a ghost.
He's Special Operations. Tier One. SEAL, Delta, something like that. You didn't fight a
martial artist today. You fought a weapon."
The words hung in the air, chilling Elena to the bone. All her arrogance, her
corporate bullying, her belief in her own supreme capability—it crumbled away,
leaving a profound sense of shame. She had mocked a man who had likely walked
through hell, a man who possessed the power to destroy her but chose mercy instead.
She had forced a lion to perform parlor tricks, unaware of the teeth hiding behind its
patient silence.
That night, Elena couldn't sleep. The video of the encounter, which one of her
assistants had thoughtlessly started recording, was deleted immediately upon her
orders. But she replayed it in her mind a thousand times. The realization of her own
hubris was a bitter pill. She had built an empire on the philosophy of strength, but
David had just shown her what true strength was. True strength wasn't about
dominating others to feed your ego; it was about possessing absolute power and
choosing absolute restraint.
She knew what she had to do. It wouldn't be easy, and it would require her to
swallow her pride completely, but it was the only way she could look at herself in the
mirror again.
Monday morning arrived with a heavy downpour, the Seattle rain washing the
streets in a dreary gray. David was in the sub-basement boiler room, humming quietly
as he calibrated a pressure valve. He had spent the weekend with Lily, taking her to
the aquarium and eating entirely too much cotton candy. The incident in the gym had
been compartmentalized, locked away in the steel vaults of his mind. He assumed
Elena would either fire him out of spite or ignore his existence entirely. He was
prepared for either outcome.
