You Ready, Roach?” The Arrogant Black Belt Humiliated the Quiet Janitor
Chapter 7
The heavy metal door of the boiler room creaked open. David didn't look up,
assuming it was Tommy or one of the other guys coming in for a shift change. But the
footsteps were too light, too deliberate.
He turned around to see Elena standing in the doorway. She was dressed down—
no designer suits, no sleek athletic wear. Just a simple raincoat, jeans, and a plain
sweater. She looked exhausted, the fierce, arrogant fire in her eyes replaced by a quiet,
uncertain vulnerability.
David wiped his hands on a rag and waited. He didn't speak. He offered no
defensive posture, simply a wall of calm neutrality.
Elena walked into the noisy, humid room, looking out of place among the massive
pipes and industrial machinery. She stopped a few feet away from him, taking a deep
breath.
"I came down here to apologize," Elena said, her voice steady but lacking its usual
commanding edge. "And I don't mean a corporate, PR apology. I mean a real one."
David raised an eyebrow slightly but remained silent.
"I was arrogant, disrespectful, and completely out of line," she continued, forcing
herself to maintain eye contact. "I let my ego dictate my actions. I treated you like you
were beneath me, and in doing so, I proved how small I actually am. You could have
seriously hurt me on Friday. You had every right to. Instead, you showed me mercy,
and you taught me a lesson I desperately needed to learn."
She reached into her pocket and pulled out an envelope, placing it on a nearby
workbench. "This is the authorization for your department's budget increase, as
promised. And a check for the ten thousand. It's yours. You won it."
David looked at the envelope, then back at her. "Keep the check. Use it to buy better
safety equipment for your loading docks. I'll take the budget increase for my team."
Elena nodded slowly, accepting the refusal. She hesitated for a moment, lingering
in the warm, noisy room. "Marcus told me... he said you move like Special Forces.
Navy SEAL?"
David's eyes hardened for a fraction of a second, the only tell he ever allowed. "I fix
pipes, Ms. Rostova. That's all I do."
"I understand," she said softly, recognizing the boundary he was setting. "I won't
ask again. But I want you to know that the disrespect ends here. From me, and from
my staff. If anyone in this building gives you or your team a hard time, I want to know
about it."
David studied her face. He was an expert at reading people, at detecting deception
and hidden agendas. For the first time since he had met her, Elena was entirely
sincere. The armor had cracked, revealing a human being underneath the corporate
machine.
"Apology accepted," David said quietly. He picked up his wrench and turned back to
the pressure valve, signaling the conversation was over.
Elena turned to leave, but stopped at the door. "Vance?"
David paused.
"If you ever get tired of fixing pipes," she said, a faint, respectful smile touching her
lips, "I have an opening for a head of security. You wouldn't have to fight. You'd just
have to be there."
David didn't turn around, but a very small, almost imperceptible smile tugged at
the corner of his mouth. "I'll keep it in mind. Have a good day, Elena."
She smiled back, recognizing the shift from 'Ms. Rostova' to 'Elena'. It was a
microscopic concession, but from a man like David, it spoke volumes. She walked out
of the boiler room, leaving the quiet man to his work.
Upstairs, the corporate world continued to spin, loud and demanding. But in the
basement, David Vance found his peace. He tightened the valve, the mechanical hum
of the building vibrating through his boots. The ghosts of his past were still there, they
always would be. But they were quiet today. He checked his watch—almost time to
pick up Lily from school. The warrior had returned to the shadows, and the father was
ready to go home.
