A Young Black Belt Taunted the Quiet Woman — Never Knowing About Her Elite Medical Training
Chapter 1
The air inside the Striking Cobra Martial Arts Academy always
smelled of canvas, sweat, and cheap pine cleaner. To Elara Vance, it
was a scent strangely reminiscent of order. For the past six months,
this unassuming dojo in the heart of the city's gray district had
become her sanctuary. She wasn't there to fight; she was there to
breathe. At thirty-four, Elara was a woman of quiet demeanor,
possessing a stillness that bordered on the invisible. She wore
plain, unbranded gray sweatpants and faded t-shirts. Her hair, a
practical shade of mousy brown, was always tied back in a severe,
utilitarian bun. To the casual observer, she was just another mid-
level professional trying to stave off the lethargy of an office job
through Tuesday and Thursday evening self-defense classes.
But the Striking Cobra wasn't just populated by tired
accountants and retail workers seeking basic fitness. It had a
competitive team, led by a young man who treated the matted floor
as his personal kingdom. His name was Julian, though he insisted
everyone call him 'Viper'. At twenty-two, Julian was a newly
minted second-degree black belt. He was undeniably athletic—
wiry, explosive, and blessed with the kind of fast-twitch muscle
2
fibers that made his spinning back kicks look like something out of
a cinematic highlight reel.
Unfortunately, Julian’s physical gifts were vastly
overshadowed by his monstrous ego. He was a creature of constant
motion and incessant noise. He didn't just walk across the dojo; he
strutted, throwing phantom jabs at the air, his eyes constantly
darting around to ensure he had an audience. When he instructed
the beginner classes—a duty he clearly felt was beneath him—he
did so with sneering condescension.
Elara usually occupied a spot in the far back corner of the
room, near the heavy bags. She executed the basic drills—the jab-
cross combinations, the simple hip throws, the wrist escapes—with
a slow, methodical precision. She lacked speed, and she certainly
lacked aggression. She never grunted, never shouted a 'kiai' upon
striking, and never sought the instructor's eye for approval. She
was merely going through the motions, finding a meditative
rhythm in the repetition.
For Julian, this lack of visible effort was a personal insult. In
his worldview, the dojo was an arena of dominance, and anyone
not displaying ferocious intensity was mocking the art. He had
begun to notice Elara a few weeks prior. Her utter lack of reaction
3
to his flamboyant demonstrations, her refusal to flinch when he
abruptly snapped a kick inches from a student's face to 'test their
reflexes', gnawed at his vanity.
"Hey, library lady!" Julian’s voice echoed across the gym one
rainy Tuesday evening. The rhythmic thud of gloves hitting Thai
pads ceased as the class ground to a halt. Julian was standing in the
center of the mat, his hands resting on his hips, a smirk playing on
his lips. He was looking directly at Elara.
Elara paused, mid-stretch, and slowly straightened up. She
didn't look offended, nor did she look intimidated. She simply
looked at him, her dark eyes calm and unreadable. "My name is
Elara," she said, her voice soft but surprisingly clear, carrying
easily in the sudden silence.
"Right, Elara," Julian scoffed, taking a few steps toward her.
