Marcus. Marcus was older, heavier, and far more aggressive. Toby

was outmatched and clearly intimidated, retreating constantly and

throwing desperate, ineffective jabs to keep Marcus at bay.

"Don't just run, Toby!" Julian barked, his voice cutting through

the humid air. "Plant your feet! Fight back! Stop being a coward!"

Toby, flustered and exhausted, attempted a clumsy roundhouse

kick. Marcus easily caught the boy's leg and, instead of letting go or

sweeping the supporting leg safely, he violently yanked Toby

forward while simultaneously stepping into a hard, rising elbow

strike aimed directly at the boy’s unprotected face.

It was a dangerous, illegal move in light sparring, especially

against an outmatched opponent. The dojo froze as Toby crumpled

to the mat, crying out, blood instantly welling from a deep gash

over his eye.

Julian didn't look concerned. He actually smiled. "That's what

happens when you leave yourself open," he declared loudly,

walking over to the fallen teenager. "Pain is a teacher, Toby. Get

up."

Before Julian could reach the boy, a figure in gray stepped

between them. Elara.

She knelt beside Toby with terrifying speed, her demeanor

entirely changed. Gone was the sluggish, methodical beginner. In

her place was a woman crackling with intense, focused energy. She

produced a clean towel from her pocket—always prepared—and

pressed it firmly against the wound with practiced precision,

checking the boy’s pupil dilation and pulse in one fluid motion.

"Hey! Back off, lady!" Julian snapped, stepping forward, his

face flushing with anger at the interruption of his authority. "I'm

handling this."

Elara didn't look up. "You are doing nothing," she said, her

voice dropping an octave, losing all its softness. It was a voice

accustomed to commanding chaos in a triage tent. "He has a minor

concussion and a two-inch laceration that will require sutures.

Someone call an ambulance, or drive him to the urgent care clinic

immediately."

The older students, snapped out of their shock by her

commanding tone, rushed to help Toby. Marcus stood back, looking

slightly guilty.

What happened next occurred in a fraction of a second, yet to

Elara, it played out in slow motion. She didn't use a block she had

learned in the beginner class. She didn't use strength to oppose his

strength. She used anatomy.

As his pushing force arrived, Elara simply relaxed her

shoulder and pivoted slightly on her heel, allowing his force to pass

harmlessly by her. Simultaneously, her right hand moved in a

short, precise arc. She didn't punch; she struck with the hardened

edge of her palm.

She targeted the radial nerve—a thick bundle of nerves that

runs down the arm, controlling the triceps and wrist. It is exposed

just above the elbow, near the humerus bone.

She struck the exact millimeter of that nerve bundle with

surgical precision, using a sharp, shocking impact rather than

brute force. The effect was instantaneous and dramatic. The

electrical signal traversing Julian's arm overloaded.
