The road was filled with motorcycles.

Hundreds of them.

Maybe more than three hundred.

Martha shook her head.

"You people never learn."

Dean looked at her.

"Actually, we learned one thing."

"What?"

He pointed toward the shelter.

"Never ignore the woman with the bell."

Martha laughed.

Then she pulled the rope.

CLANG.

The riders answered with their engines.

The valley thundered.

But this time, there was no tornado.

No fear.

No running.

Only people returning home.

Martha looked at the sky.

For a moment, she imagined Walter standing beside her.

She could almost hear him laughing.

She placed one hand on the old Harley.

Then she whispered:

"You were right."

Dean heard her.

"About what?"

Martha smiled.

"He always said motorcycles were freedom."

She looked down the road.

"Turns out they're also family."

Dean nodded.

The engines grew louder.

Martha put on her helmet.

She climbed onto the Harley.

Dean started his own motorcycle beside her.

Hundreds of riders waited.

Martha raised one hand.

The road opened.

And the old widow who had once stood alone on a porch while a tornado crossed the fields rode into the morning surrounded by people who had once been strangers.

The storm had taken part of her house.

It had taken her garden.

It had taken old photographs, furniture, walls, and memories.

But it had also brought seventy-nine strangers into her basement.

And those strangers had returned with hundreds more.

Not to repay a debt.

Not because they owed her.

They returned because kindness had given them something no storm could destroy.

A place to belong.

Martha twisted the throttle.

The Harley roared.

Three hundred engines answered.

And together they disappeared down the road.
