Dean found her sitting there.

"What happened?"

She handed him the letter.

He read it silently.

Then returned it.

"He knew."

"What?"

"That you'd need people."

Martha looked away.

"I don't need seventy-nine bikers."

Dean smiled.

"Maybe not."

Outside, motorcycles began arriving.

Not seventy-nine.

Thirty.

Then forty.

Martha stared through the window.

Dean looked too.

"They weren't supposed to come back yet."

Martha's voice was barely audible.

"Who are they?"

Dean smiled.

"Friends."

The riders had come back to help rebuild.

They brought lumber.

Tools.

Generators.

Food.

Water.

Medical supplies.

Martha stood in the driveway as motorcycle after motorcycle arrived.

She counted.

Twenty.

Forty.

Seventy.

Then more.

She turned toward Dean.

"You said friends."

"I underestimated them."

The work began immediately.

The old barn was rebuilt first.

Then the roof.

Then the fence.

A young rider named Lucy planted new hydrangeas where Martha's old ones had been.

Martha watched her.

"You don't have to replace those."

Lucy smiled.

"I know."

"Why are you?"

"Because you said they mattered."

Martha felt something inside her break.

Not painfully.

Something old.

Something locked.
