Chapter 9: The Discovery

It wasn't a credit card. It wasn't a business card.

It was a trifold leather badge holder, significantly heavier than it looked.

Miller stared at it for a moment, confused. Why would a civilian carry a badge holder? He assumed, for a fleeting second, that it was a fake—a novelty item, or perhaps she was a private investigator or a security guard.

With a patronizing smirk still plastered on his face, he flicked the leather open.

The afternoon sun caught the object inside, sending a blinding flash of golden light directly into Miller's eyes. He blinked away the spots, his vision focusing on the intricate, heavy gold shield pinned securely to the leather.

The shield was beautiful, terrifying, and deeply unmistakable. It was crowned with the aggressive, spread wings of a bald eagle. In the center, enameled in deep, majestic blue, was the seal of the United States Department of Justice.

Above the seal, deeply engraved in the gold, read the words: OFFICE OF THE INSPECTOR GENERAL.

Below the seal, the engraving continued: SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT.

Miller’s breath hitched in his throat. His heart skipped a beat, then began hammering frantically against his ribs.

His eyes darted frantically to the federal identification card slotted into the clear plastic window opposite the badge.

There was her picture—Elena Vance, without the sunglasses, looking stern and uncompromising.

Next to the photo, the bold, black text read:

ELENA VANCE Deputy Director, Civil Rights Division Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation. Security Clearance: TOP SECRET / SCI

Miller stopped breathing entirely.

The world around him seemed to slow down, the ambient noise of the gas station fading into a distant, underwater hum. He read the card again. And again. Hoping, praying, that his eyes were deceiving him. That he was hallucinating. That this was some elaborate, impossible prank.

But the gold shield was heavy and real in his hand. The seal was perfect. The ID card possessed all the holographic security watermarks of the federal government.

He hadn't just arrested an innocent woman.

He had violently detained, handcuffed, and forced to her knees the Deputy Director of the FBI’s Civil Rights Division. He had assaulted the very woman whose entire federal mandate was to investigate, prosecute, and dismantle corrupt and abusive local police departments.

Chapter 10: The Silence

The silence that fell over the gas station was absolute.

It was a heavy, suffocating silence, thick with the sudden, catastrophic realization of what had just occurred. The wind seemed to die down. The distant hum of the interstate vanished. The only sound was the soft, rhythmic snick-snick-snick of the gas pump completing its cycle and shutting off automatically.

Officer Miller stood frozen by the hood of his cruiser. His face, previously flushed red with anger and exertion, rapidly drained of all color, turning a sickly, ashen gray. His jaw hung open slightly. The badge holder in his hand began to tremble, vibrating with the sudden, violent shaking of his entire arm.

He slowly raised his eyes, looking away from the golden shield and staring at the woman kneeling on the oil-stained concrete.
