Bradley made the only choice he could.
He turned to the Captain standing beside him. "Captain. Strip them. Badges, guns, radios. Put them in the back of your cruiser."
Miller let out a strangled gasp. "Chief, you can't do this! The union—"
"Shut up, Miller!" the Captain barked, stepping forward and unsnapping Miller's gun belt. "You're done. Hand it over."
In front of the growing crowd of onlookers, in front of the college students still recording every second, Officer Miller and Officer Davis were disarmed. Their heavy duty belts, complete with holstered weapons and Tasers, were handed over to the Captain. Their silver badges were unpinned from their chests.
They were reduced from authority figures to civilians in a matter of seconds.
"Hands behind your back, Miller," the Captain said grimly, pulling out his own set of handcuffs.
The poetic justice was overwhelming. Miller, pale and shaking, turned around and placed his hands behind his back. The metal cuffs clicked shut over his wrists.
Chapter 15: The Departure
Elena Vance watched the proceedings with cold detachment. She felt no joy in seeing the men arrested. There was no triumph here, only the grim satisfaction of excising a rot that never should have been allowed to fester in the first place.
She turned to Chief Bradley.
"My office will be taking over this investigation," Elena told him. "Expect a team of federal investigators at your precinct by 0800 tomorrow. We will be reviewing every arrest record, every use-of-force report, and every body camera footage tied to Officer Miller for the past ten years. If we find a pattern, Chief, your department will be placed under federal oversight."
"Understood, Director," Bradley said quietly, looking thoroughly defeated.
"Have your captain clear these vehicles from my path," Elena ordered.
Within minutes, the police cruisers were shuffled around. Miller and Davis were placed in the back of the supervisor's car, their heads hung low, the dark tint of the windows hiding their shame from the world.
Elena walked around to the driver's side of her black SUV. She pulled the nozzle from the gas tank, placed it back on the pump, and screwed her gas cap shut.
She opened the door and climbed into the plush leather driver's seat. The air conditioning blasted her, a stark, freezing contrast to the sweltering heat of the afternoon. She reached over to the center console, resting her hand briefly on the soft leather of her handbag.
Through the windshield, she saw the college students lower their phones. One of them raised a hand, offering a silent, hesitant wave of respect. Elena offered a small, curt nod in return.
She started the engine. The powerful V8 roared to life, a deep, satisfying rumble that vibrated through the floorboards.
She put the SUV in drive and slowly rolled forward. The remaining police officers parted, creating a wide path for her to exit. She didn't look at them as she passed. She kept her eyes fixed straight ahead, on the bright, shimmering horizon of the interstate.
She merged back onto the highway, the gas station quickly disappearing in her rearview mirror. Her wrists still ached slightly where the metal had bitten into her skin. It was a physical reminder of the fragility of freedom, a stark realization that the uniform did not grant immunity from the very prejudices her department fought to dismantle.
As she accelerated north, the adrenaline began to fade, replaced by a cold, steel resolve. Today, a badge had saved her. Tomorrow, she would ensure that the badge was never used as a weapon against anyone else.
The afternoon remained bright and painfully clear, but as Elena drove toward the capital, the shadows seemed just a little bit shorter.
