"Remove these handcuffs," Elena commanded. "Now."
Chapter 12: The Reversal
Davis didn't hesitate. He practically sprinted forward, pulling his small handcuff key from his belt loop with trembling fingers.
He knelt behind Elena, his breathing shallow and rapid. "I'm sorry, ma'am," he whispered frantically, his hands shaking so badly he struggled to insert the key into the tiny keyhole. "I'm so sorry. I told him we should run the plates."
"Apologies are irrelevant, Davis. Get these off me," Elena said coldly.
Click. Click.
The ratchets disengaged. The heavy steel loops fell away from her wrists.
Elena slowly brought her arms forward. She rubbed her wrists, where the metal had left deep, angry red indentations against her dark skin, right next to her silver watch.
She stood up.
She didn't rush. She moved with deliberate, powerful grace. She stood to her full height of five-foot-nine, adjusting her black sunglasses, brushing the dirt and grit off the knees of her cargo pants.
She looked at the three officers. They were standing in a loose semicircle, looking at her with expressions of sheer terror. They looked small. They looked exactly like what they were—men who had abused their power and were now facing the ultimate reckoning.
Over by the convenience store, the two college students were still recording, their mouths hanging open in disbelief. They hadn't heard every word, but the visual of the aggressive cops suddenly shrinking back and uncuffing the woman spoke volumes.
Elena walked over to the hood of Miller’s cruiser, where her smartphone still lay. She picked it up, tapped in her passcode, and dialed a number from her favorites list.
She put the phone to her ear, keeping her eyes locked on Miller.
"Yes, it's Director Vance," she said into the phone, her voice echoing clearly across the gas station. "Get me the Chief of Police for Oakhaven. Connect me directly to his cell. No, right now. It's an emergency."
Miller closed his eyes. His career was over. His pension was gone. He was likely facing federal civil rights charges. Everything he had built, destroyed in five minutes because he couldn't control his own prejudice and rage.
"Chief Bradley?" Elena said into the phone a moment later. "This is Deputy Director Elena Vance, FBI Civil Rights Division. I am currently standing at the Exxon station on Interstate 84. Three of your officers have just unlawfully detained and assaulted me."
She paused, listening to the panicked sputtering on the other end of the line.
"Yes. I want you down here immediately. Bring a captain. Bring internal affairs. Bring the duty union rep if you must. You have exactly ten minutes before I call the regional field office and have a tactical team lock down this entire precinct."
She hung up the phone and slipped it into her pocket.
Chapter 13: The Waiting Game
The next ten minutes were the longest of Officer Miller’s life.
Elena did not speak to them again. She did not yell. She did not gloat. She simply leaned against the side of her black SUV, crossed her arms over her chest, and waited.
The silence was a weapon, and she wielded it flawlessly.
