“Easy Money,” a Black Belt Laughed at a Single Dad — Then the Dad Stepped Forward Wearing His Daughter’s Bracelet
Chapter 1
The city of New Hope was never truly quiet,
even in the depths of night. Sirens wailed in the
distance, a constant reminder of the struggles
that painted the streets. For Arthur Pendelton,
the noise was merely a backdrop to the
symphony of worries playing in his mind. He sat
at the small, worn kitchen table of his one-
bedroom apartment, staring blankly at a pile of
past-due bills. The numbers blurred together, a
menacing red tide threatening to drown him and
the only light in his life: his six-year-old daughter,
Lily.
Arthur rubbed his tired eyes, his calloused
hands rough against his skin. He was a man who
had seen better days, though few could tell just
by looking at him. At thirty-four, his hair was
prematurely greying at the temples, and a
permanent crease of worry marked his brow. He
worked three jobs—stocking shelves at a grocery
store, driving a delivery truck, and occasionally
helping out at a local mechanic’s garage. Yet, no
matter how many hours he poured into his work,
it was never enough to bridge the gap.
The core of his anxiety was Lily’s medical
condition. It wasn't life-threatening, thank
heavens, but the severe asthma and chronic
respiratory issues required expensive
medications and frequent doctor visits that his
meager insurance refused to cover. Just
yesterday, the pediatrician had recommended a
specialized air filtration system for their home
and a new, costly inhaler to manage her
increasingly severe attacks.
"Daddy?" A soft, sleepy voice interrupted his
grim calculations.
Arthur turned, his stern expression melting
instantly into a warm, reassuring smile. Lily
stood in the doorway, clutching her worn stuffed
rabbit, Barnaby. She was a tiny thing, frail but
possessing a spirit that could outshine the sun.
Her bright green eyes, so like her late mother’s,
looked at him with innocent trust.
"Hey there, sweet pea," Arthur said, opening
his arms. "Why are you out of bed? It's way past
your bedtime."
Lily padded across the linoleum floor and
climbed into his lap, resting her head against his
chest. "I had a bad dream," she mumbled,
coughing slightly. The sound of that cough was
like a dagger to Arthur's heart. He held her
tighter, resting his chin on the top of her head.
"Just a dream, baby. I'm right here. Nothing's
gonna get you while I'm around," he whispered,
rocking her gently.
After a few moments, Lily pulled back and
reached into the pocket of her oversized pajama
top. "I made this for you today," she said,
presenting a clumsily strung bracelet made of
bright, mismatched plastic beads. "It’s a magic
