bracelet, Daddy. It makes you strong and brave,
like a superhero."
Arthur felt a lump form in his throat. He took
the fragile piece of jewelry, examining it as if it
were made of solid gold and diamonds. "It's
beautiful, Lily. The most beautiful thing I've ever
seen." He slipped it onto his thick wrist. It was
tight, the elastic stretching to its limit, but he
didn't care. "See? I feel stronger already."
Lily beamed, her smile radiating pure joy.
"Good. Now you don't have to be sad anymore."
Arthur carried her back to bed, tucking her in
and staying by her side until her breathing grew
slow and even. As he walked back to the kitchen,
the weight of the world felt a little less crushing,
anchored by the bright plastic beads on his wrist.
He needed ten thousand dollars. He needed it
soon. And as he glanced at a crumpled flyer on
the counter he had picked up earlier that day, a
dangerous, desperate idea began to form in his

Marcus grabbed the microphone from the
announcer, pacing the ring. "Is this all New Hope
has to offer?" he bellowed, his voice echoing
through the PA system. "Three guys already tried.
Three guys left on stretchers! I'm offering ten
grand! Ten thousand dollars of cold, hard cash!"
He pointed to a clear acrylic box sitting on the
announcer's table, filled with neat stacks of green
bills. "All you gotta do is last three minutes. But
let's face it, none of you couch potatoes have the
guts!"
The crowd booed and cheered in equal
measure, caught up in the spectacle. Arthur stood
near the back, leaning against the cold
cinderblock wall. He wore a faded grey hoodie,
worn-out jeans, and a pair of old sneakers. He
looked completely out of place among the
posturing tough guys and loudmouthed fans. He
was just a tired father, blending into the
shadows.
He watched Marcus move. The man was fast
and strong, undoubtedly skilled, but his
technique was sloppy, fueled by ego rather than
discipline. He telegraphed his punches and left
