"Hey, buddy," Travis called. "You got a minute?"

Daniel glanced at Lily. "Stay beside me, sweetheart."

Travis stopped in front of the bench. "Didn't you hear me?"

"I did."

"Then I'm talking to you."

Daniel took a slow breath. "What do you need?"

Travis looked at the pretzel. "That your daughter?"

"Yes."

"She doesn't look much like you."

Daniel said nothing.

Marcus laughed. "Maybe her real dad finally escaped."

Lily's face changed.

Daniel felt the words strike somewhere deep inside him, but he did not let his daughter see his anger.

Instead, he crouched beside her. "Lily, take my phone and walk over to the park attendant's booth. Stay where the other families are. I'll be right behind you."

She looked up at him anxiously. "Daddy?"

"It's okay. Go on."

She hesitated before taking the phone.

Daniel waited until she began walking away.

Then he stood.

Travis's smile widened. "What's the matter? Sending the kid away because Daddy's scared?"

Daniel met his eyes. "No. I'm sending her away because I'm not interested in letting a stranger teach her that cruelty is normal."

For the first time, Travis's smile faltered.

Then his face hardened. "You think you're better than us?"

Daniel looked at the five men surrounding him. "No. I think we're done talking."

Travis stepped closer. "Not until I say we're done."

Daniel's expression remained unchanged. "You don't have that authority."

Travis's smile disappeared.

And somewhere beneath the trees, a woman sitting on a nearby bench slowly raised her phone and began recording.

She had no idea who Daniel Mercer was.

Neither did the five men standing before him.

But within minutes, the entire park would learn that the quiet father they had mistaken for an easy target possessed a past none of them could imagine.

And the first mistake had already been made.

Travis Cole had built his reputation on a simple belief: most people could be controlled if you embarrassed them in front of enough witnesses.

He understood fear better than he understood respect. He knew how to make a man look away, how to make a woman lower her voice, and how to turn a minor disagreement into a public confrontation that left the other person desperate to escape.

What he did not understand was restraint.

To Travis, restraint was weakness. Silence was submission. Walking away was an admission of defeat.

Daniel Mercer represented everything Travis disliked about people he couldn't easily read.

The man wasn't trembling. He wasn't shouting. He wasn't making excuses.

He simply stood there, watching.

"What's your name?" Travis demanded.

"Daniel."

"Daniel what?"

"Mercer."

Travis glanced at his friends. "Daniel Mercer. Sounds like a guy who writes parking tickets."

Ryan laughed too loudly.

Daniel looked toward the park attendant's booth, where Lily had stopped beside a middle-aged employee wearing a green jacket. The attendant was speaking to her gently, and she seemed safe.

That was all Daniel needed to know.

He turned back. "Now that we've introduced ourselves, I'm leaving."

Travis stepped sideways to block his path. "Nobody said you could leave."

Daniel looked at him. "You don't have that authority."

Marcus moved behind Daniel, close enough to interfere if he tried to walk away. Kevin positioned himself near the bench. Shane continued filming, holding his phone at chest level.

Ryan wandered toward the path, apparently interested in making sure nobody approached.

They had surrounded him without needing to discuss it.

Daniel recognized the formation immediately.

Five attackers, uneven spacing, one aggressive leader, two men looking for an opportunity to join in, one filming for entertainment, and one trying to anticipate the consequences.

It was a familiar arrangement.

The difference was that this time he wasn't standing inside a cage beneath bright lights.

He was in a public park, wearing an ordinary jacket, with his daughter watching from a distance.

"Listen carefully," Daniel said. "I'm not looking for trouble. I haven't threatened anyone. I'm asking you to let me leave."

Travis tilted his head. "Or what?"

"Or nothing. I'll leave, and you'll continue your afternoon."

That answer irritated Travis more than an insult would have.

He wanted a challenge. He wanted Daniel to raise his voice, clench his fists, or say something that could justify the confrontation.

Instead, Daniel was treating him like an unpleasant inconvenience.

"You know what your problem is?" Travis asked.

Daniel waited.

"You walk around acting like you're some kind of tough guy."

"I haven't acted like anything."

"You're standing here staring at me."

"I'm listening to you."

"Same thing."

Daniel almost sighed. "Then we're having a misunderstanding."

Marcus laughed. "Listen to this guy. He talks like a lawyer."

"Maybe he is a lawyer," Shane said, still filming. "A really bad one."

Travis suddenly shoved Daniel in the chest.

It wasn't a particularly powerful push, but it was deliberate. He wanted Daniel to stumble, preferably in front of the growing audience.

Daniel took one short step backward to absorb the force.

His balance barely changed.

Travis noticed.

He pushed him again, harder.

Daniel shifted his weight and remained upright.

"Don't touch me," Daniel said.

His voice was still quiet, but something in it had changed.

Kevin recognized that change without understanding why.

He had spent years around athletes. He knew the difference between someone trying to appear confident and someone who had no need to prove it.

Daniel's stance was relaxed. His hands hung naturally at his sides, his shoulders loose, his chin slightly lowered. He wasn't puffing out his chest or leaning forward.

He looked almost bored.

Kevin frowned. "Travis, leave it."

Travis ignored him. "What, you afraid he'll hurt his feelings?"

Kevin replied, "I'm saying let's go."

Travis turned toward him. "You getting soft now?"

Kevin's jaw tightened. "I'm not interested in catching another charge because you can't control yourself."

The mention of charges briefly silenced Ryan.

Daniel seized the opportunity. "Your friend is making sense. Let this go."

Travis swung his attention back to Daniel. "You don't tell me what to do."

"I'm not telling you what to do. I'm giving you a chance to stop."

That sentence landed badly.

Travis's face darkened.

He grabbed Daniel's jacket near the collar.

A woman nearby gasped.

"Hey!" someone shouted. "Leave him alone!"
