"That was a long time ago," he finally said.

Kevin shook his head. "Not that long. I watched your fight against Andre Voss. The title defense in Las Vegas."

Daniel's expression tightened at the name. "I remember."

"Everyone thought Voss had you finished in the third round. You were exhausted, and he kept pressing you against the cage. Then you turned the whole fight around."

Travis pushed himself fully upright.

"Hold on. You're telling me this guy used to fight professionally?"

Kevin looked at him with open disbelief. "Professionally? He was one of the best fighters in his division."

Marcus let out a short laugh that sounded forced. "That doesn't mean anything. This is a park, not a cage."

"No," Kevin said. "It means you were lucky he didn't decide to do what you were trying to do to him."

Daniel stood slowly, keeping one arm around Lily. "That's enough."

Kevin stopped speaking.

Daniel's tone had changed. It wasn't threatening, but it carried the unmistakable finality of someone accustomed to being heard.

"I'm not interested in discussing my career," Daniel said. "I'm interested in getting my daughter home."

Travis's face twisted.

He had been humiliated in front of a crowd, and the revelation about Daniel's past made the humiliation worse. In his mind, there were only two possibilities: defeat the man publicly or find a way to convince everyone that the confrontation hadn't been a defeat at all.

He chose the second.

"Look, we were just messing around," he said, suddenly adopting a casual tone. "Nobody was seriously hurt."

The woman who had been recording from the bench stepped forward. "That's not what I saw."

Travis turned toward her. "Nobody asked you."

"I watched you shove him. I watched you grab his jacket. I watched you throw the first punch."

"Then you saw him throw us around!"

"He was defending himself."

The woman raised her phone. "I recorded the entire thing."

A second voice came from the crowd. "So did I."

Then another. "And me."

Travis looked around.

His confidence began to collapse.

The crowd had become a wall of witnesses, and for once, he couldn't intimidate his way through it.

A uniformed park security officer arrived, followed by a police patrol car approaching the entrance.

Daniel felt Lily tense against him. "Daddy, are we in trouble?"

He looked down immediately. "No, sweetheart. You haven't done anything wrong."

"But the police are coming."

"That's okay. We're going to tell them what happened."

She nodded, though her eyes remained frightened.

Daniel wished he could make the entire afternoon disappear.

He wished Lily could return to chasing pigeons and complaining about pretzel prices. He wished he could take her home without having to explain why adults sometimes behaved worse than children.

But he knew that walking away without reporting the assault would only allow Travis and his friends to repeat the same behavior somewhere else.

So he stayed.

When the officers arrived, the first one approached Travis.

"What's going on here?"

Travis immediately began talking. "This guy attacked us. We were minding our own business, and he started throwing people around."

The officer glanced toward Daniel. "Sir, is that true?"

Daniel answered calmly. "No. They approached me while I was sitting with my daughter. Mr. Cole shoved me several times, grabbed my jacket, and threw the first punch. His friends then joined the confrontation. I defended myself and tried to leave."

The officer looked at the five men. "Anyone else involved?"

Kevin raised his hand slightly. "I saw it. Daniel's telling the truth."

Travis spun toward him. "Are you kidding me?"

Kevin met his gaze. "No. I'm not going to lie for you."

Shane slowly lowered his phone and showed the officer the recording. "I have the video."

Travis stared at him. "You traitor."

Shane swallowed. "I'm not taking the blame for something you did."

The officer watched several seconds of footage, then called his partner over.

Daniel remained beside Lily, answering questions while the officers spoke to witnesses.

No one was shouting now.

The confrontation had lost its theatrical energy. Without the intimidation, the posturing, and the eager audience, the five men looked less like an unstoppable group and more like what they were: adults who had chosen to frighten a stranger for their own amusement.

When an officer asked Daniel whether he wanted to make a formal complaint, he looked at Lily.

She was holding his hand with both of hers.

"Yes," he said. "I do."

Travis scoffed. "You're seriously going to press charges over a little argument?"

Daniel turned toward him.

"A little argument is when two people disagree. You and your friends surrounded me, threatened me, and attacked me while my daughter watched."

Travis opened his mouth.

Daniel continued. "You don't get to decide that it was harmless simply because you didn't get the outcome you wanted."

The officer stepped between them. "That's enough. Mr. Cole, you'll need to come with us while we take statements."

Travis's expression changed. "What? You're arresting me?"

"We're investigating an assault. Cooperate with us."

Marcus began protesting. Ryan asked whether they could simply leave. Shane stood silently, still holding his phone.

Kevin, however, remained beside the bench.

As the officers guided Travis toward the patrol car, Kevin approached Daniel.

"I owe you an apology."

Daniel looked at him. "For what?"

"For standing there too long before trying to stop it."

Daniel studied him for a moment. "At least you tried."

Kevin nodded, but his expression remained troubled.

"There's something else you should know."

Daniel waited.

Kevin glanced toward the departing officers. "Travis has done this before. Not just here. He's been targeting people around this neighborhood for months."

Daniel felt his stomach tighten. "Why are you telling me this?"

"Because today's the first time someone stood up to him without being afraid."

Kevin lowered his voice.

"And because I think what happened here is only the beginning.

The drive home was quiet.

Lily sat in the back seat with her favorite stuffed rabbit pressed against her chest. Usually, she filled the car with a running commentary about everything she had seen, heard, or imagined during the day.

Today, she watched the streets pass through the window.

Daniel checked the rearview mirror. "You okay back there?"
