Travis didn't look away from Daniel. "You think you're special?"

Daniel glanced down at the hand gripping his jacket.

Then he looked back up. "No."

"Then act like it."

Daniel's eyes became colder. "Let go."

For a moment, Travis seemed to consider refusing.

Then he released the jacket with an exaggerated shove. "Make me."

Daniel could have ended the confrontation quickly.

He knew precisely how much damage an unrestrained strike could cause. He knew how vulnerable the human body was and how quickly a situation could turn from a public argument into a medical emergency.

That knowledge was exactly why he did not attack.

He had spent years learning to fight.

He had spent even longer learning what fighting could cost.

Three years earlier, after Emily's funeral, Daniel had promised himself that Lily would never have to watch her father destroy his life because someone had provoked him.

He intended to keep that promise.

"I won't fight you," Daniel said.

Travis grinned. "Then you're a coward."

"Call me whatever you want."

"You scared?"

"Yes."

The unexpected answer made Travis pause.

Daniel continued. "I'm scared my daughter will remember this day for the wrong reasons. I'm scared one of us will get seriously hurt. And I'm scared that you'll keep making decisions you'll regret long after this afternoon is over."

Travis stared at him.

Then he burst out laughing. "Did everybody hear that? He's scared!"

Shane swung his phone toward the spectators. "Get this on camera!"

But not everyone was laughing.

An older man standing beside the path had stopped walking. A mother pulled her young son behind her. Two teenagers exchanged uneasy looks.

The scene was no longer entertaining.

It was becoming frightening.

Travis stepped closer and jabbed a finger against Daniel's chest. "You know what I think? I think you hide behind that little girl because you're too weak to stand up for yourself."

Daniel's hands curled slightly, then relaxed. "Don't bring my daughter into this."

"Why? Going to cry?"

Travis shoved him again.

This time, Daniel didn't step back.

He simply remained where he was, absorbing the contact without reacting.

The contrast was unsettling.

Travis was breathing harder now. His aggression was beginning to look less like confidence and more like desperation.

Then Marcus moved.

He came around Daniel's left side and grabbed his arm. "Maybe we should teach him some manners."

Kevin immediately stepped forward. "Marcus, don't."

But Marcus had already committed himself.

Daniel turned his head toward him. "Take your hand off me."

Marcus tightened his grip. "Or what?"

Daniel looked at each of them in turn.

Five men.

A crowded public park.

A dozen phones beginning to rise.

And a little girl who was watching from beside the attendant's booth.

Daniel made his decision.

He would not throw the first punch.

He would not chase anyone.

He would not allow their cruelty to dictate the person he became.

But he would protect himself if they forced him to.

"Last warning," he said.

Travis smiled. "What's the matter, champion?"

Daniel went completely still.

For one strange second, the word seemed to hang in the air between them.

Champion.

Travis had used it sarcastically, without knowing how close he had come to the truth.

And then he made the mistake that changed everything.

He drew back his fist.

Daniel saw the punch coming before Travis threw it.

It wasn't because he possessed supernatural reflexes or could predict the future. It was because he had spent more than a decade studying the small physical signals that preceded violence.

Travis's right shoulder tightened.

His weight shifted forward.

His jaw clenched.

His hand drew backward.

The movement was crude, angry, and entirely predictable.

Daniel moved his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Travis's fist cut through empty air.

For half a second, nobody reacted.

Travis stared at Daniel in disbelief. "What the hell?"

Daniel took one step backward. "Stop."

Travis swung again.

This time, Daniel moved farther to the side. Travis stumbled past him, nearly losing his balance.

The crowd made a collective sound of surprise.

Someone laughed nervously.

Shane lowered his phone for a moment, then raised it again. "Did you see that?"

Travis turned around, red-faced. "You think that's funny?"

"No."

"Then stop dodging!"

Daniel stared at him. "You're trying to hit me."

"So?"

"So I'm trying not to get hit."

A few people in the crowd actually laughed at that.

Travis heard them.

His embarrassment transformed into anger.

He charged.

Daniel sidestepped and used a brief, controlled movement to redirect Travis's momentum. Travis stumbled toward the bench, caught himself with one hand, and knocked a paper cup onto the pavement.

Daniel immediately stepped away. "Enough," he said.

Travis straightened slowly.

His face had gone pale beneath the redness.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

Then he noticed his friends watching him.

The uncertainty vanished.

"Get him!"

Marcus moved first.

He lunged toward Daniel, reaching for his jacket. Daniel turned and broke the grip without striking him, stepping into the open space beside the bench.

Marcus followed, swinging wildly.

Daniel avoided the blow and pushed him away with an open palm to the shoulder.

Marcus staggered backward.

Kevin swore under his breath. "Are you idiots serious?"

Travis pointed at Daniel. "Stop running!"

Daniel glanced toward Lily.

She was still beside the park attendant, but her small hands were pressed against her mouth.

He hated that she was seeing this.

He hated that five grown men had turned an ordinary afternoon into a frightening memory for a child.

Most of all, he hated the familiar feeling returning to his body.

The heightened awareness.

The precise calculations.

The strange quiet that settled over everything when a confrontation became physically dangerous.

He had spent years trying to leave that part of himself behind.

Now it was returning without permission.

"Everybody stop," Daniel said, his voice carrying across the clearing. "I'm not here to hurt anyone. Walk away."

Ryan looked toward the spectators. "He's attacking us!"

The accusation was so absurd that several people shouted in protest.

"You started it!"

"I saw you swing first!"

"There's video!"

Shane hesitated.

His phone was still recording, and the footage clearly showed Travis shoving Daniel, grabbing his jacket, and throwing the first punch.
