“No.”
“Then stay out of it.”
“I will.”
That evening, six neighbors met at Mel's Diner.
I explained what I had found.
Dorothy Martinez stared at me.
“So she's been paying her relatives with our money?”
“That appears to be what the records indicate.”
Bob Orion shook his head.
“Can we remove her?”
Dorothy opened the HOA bylaws.
“Ten homeowners can petition for a special meeting.”
She looked around the table.
“We have more than ten.”
For the first time, the neighborhood stopped complaining individually.
We started organizing.
Then I told them something they didn't know.
“There's one more thing.”
Everyone looked at me.
“I'm the police chief.”
Silence.
Then Dorothy burst out laughing.
“You're serious?”
“Yes.”
She wiped her eyes.
“That woman has spent months attacking the police chief over a fuel pump?”
“Yes.”
Dorothy shook her head.
“That's almost impressive.”
I didn't laugh.
Because by then, I knew something.
Brenda had no idea how close she was to losing everything.
The Federal Report
Brenda responded with an emergency meeting.
Her agenda demanded immediate removal of my fuel system.
This time, she claimed she had federal documentation.
The projector showed photographs of industrial explosions.
“Terrorism risks,” she announced.
I stared at the screen.
Terrorism.
Because of my private diesel tank.
She demanded a $10,000 “community safety deposit.”
Then she demanded removal.
I raised my hand.
“I'd like to see the federal report.”
Her expression changed.
“The documents are sensitive.”
“Which federal agency issued them?”
She hesitated.
I pulled out my phone.
“Let's verify.”
I had already contacted a federal environmental official.
The call connected.
“Agent Morrison speaking.”
“Agent, our HOA claims federal regulations require removal of my properly permitted private fuel system because of terrorism concerns. Is that accurate?”
“No.”
The room went silent.
“Federal environmental regulations address storage, containment, quantity, and safety. A properly permitted private residential system does not automatically trigger such action.”
Someone laughed.
Another resident shouted:
“Where did Brenda get those documents?”
Brenda shut down the projector.
“We're postponing the vote.”
Dorothy stood.
“I move that all extraordinary assessments be suspended until an independent audit is completed.”
