The Hammer on the Driveway
The first thing Marcus Cole heard was the sound of glass breaking.
It was sharp, violent, and completely out of place in the quiet neighborhood of Briarwood Estates.
He stepped out of his garage just in time to see Karen Whitmore raise a heavy sledgehammer above the hood of his dark-blue Lamborghini.
For a second, neither of them moved.
Broken glass already covered the driveway.
The passenger-side windshield was shattered.
A spiderweb of cracks stretched across the remaining glass.
Karen's white blouse was speckled with tiny fragments.
She looked at Marcus as though he were the one who had done something wrong.
"This vehicle violates community standards," she said.
Marcus stared at the hammer.
Then at his car.
Then back at Karen.
"So you destroyed it?"
Karen tightened her grip.
"It has been parked in public view for nine days."
"It's been parked inside my driveway."
"It attracts strangers. People have been stopping to photograph it."
"Admiring a car isn't an HOA violation."
Karen pointed the hammer at him.
"You think buying one house gives you the right to turn Briarwood into a circus?"
Marcus didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked down at the phone in his hand.
A video call was still active.
Six faces filled the screen.
Six members of the Briarwood Estates board.
The association's attorney.
An insurance investigator.
And a court-certified digital recorder.
Every one of them had watched Karen swing the hammer.
A small red symbol in the upper corner of Marcus's screen indicated that the emergency meeting was being recorded.
Karen's eyes finally moved toward the phone.
Her confidence faltered.
Marcus glanced at the timer.
"Twenty-four seconds."
She frowned.
"What?"
"Twenty-four seconds until the vote."
"You’re bluffing."
"Fourteen seconds."
Karen stepped toward him.
"End that call."
