Marcus was the founder and CEO of Cole Mobility Technologies, a company specializing in battery-management systems, vehicle-security software, and advanced performance components.

He understood complicated machines.

He understood hidden connections.

And, increasingly, he understood Karen Whitmore.

The Lamborghini

The Lamborghini was not supposed to be a weapon.

It was supposed to be a test vehicle.

One of only three development vehicles owned by Cole Mobility Technologies, it was being used to test an encrypted vehicle-control architecture.

From the outside, it looked like an extravagant supercar.

Underneath, however, was millions of dollars of experimental equipment.

The prototype sensor system alone was worth more than most houses in Briarwood.

Karen didn't know that.

She simply saw an expensive car.

And she hated what it represented.

She had told residents that Marcus was showing off.

She claimed he was using Briarwood as a marketing display.

She called an emergency meeting and attempted to pass a resolution declaring the vehicle a commercial promotional vehicle.

The board rejected it.

Karen acted anyway.

That afternoon, she arrived at Marcus's house carrying a thick violation folder.

And a sledgehammer.

She claimed she needed the hammer to "disable an unlawfully operated vehicle" until a towing company could remove it.

Marcus had been assembling shelves inside his garage when he heard her shouting.

He stepped outside.

"Ms. Whitmore, you need to leave."

"I am enforcing community standards."

"You don't have authority to damage my property."

"I've given you multiple warnings."

"None of them authorize this."

Karen raised the hammer.

"Move away from the vehicle."

Marcus reached for his phone.

Karen swung.

The windshield exploded.

Marcus immediately began streaming the incident to the board.

Karen raised the hammer again.

"Stop."

She ignored him.
