me up and down with undisguised disdain. 'Are you

the manager?' she demanded. Not the owner, not the

coach. The manager. 'I'm the owner and head coach,'

I replied, stepping off the mats to meet them, subtly

gesturing for them to step back onto the concrete

floor. 'My name is Marcus. How can I help you and

your son?' I assumed they were mother and son; the

resemblance in their sneers was uncanny.

This was the beginning of an encounter that

would test every ounce of patience I had cultivated

over a decade of martial arts. The sanctuary I had

built, a place of respect and hard work, was about to

be violated by the pure, unadulterated hubris of a

spoiled child and his enabling mother. And the

lesson they were about to learn would be etched

into their memories forever.

Chapter 2

'I am Susan, and this is my son, Braden,' the

woman announced, crossing her arms. Her voice cut

through the ambient noise of the gym like a siren.

'We are here because Braden is a natural fighter.

He's been watching UFC for years, and he knows all

the moves. He needs a place to spar, but we aren't

going to pay your ridiculous initiation fees just so he

can beat up your beginners.'

I blinked, processing the sheer audacity of her

opening statement. I looked at Braden. He was

currently throwing shadow punches at the air, his

technique so fundamentally flawed that I winced.

He was throwing arm punches, leaving his chin

completely exposed, and dragging his feet. 'I see,' I

said, maintaining a neutral expression. 'Well, Susan,

martial arts is a journey. Everyone starts at the

beginning, regardless of how much television

they've watched. We require all new members to

take our fundamentals class.'

Braden stopped his frantic air-punching and

scoffed. 'Fundamentals? Bro, I don't need

fundamentals. I've been in plenty of street fights. I

have knockout power. I just need a sparring partner

who can actually take a hit. Your guys look pretty

soft.' He gestured vaguely toward my advanced

students, some of whom were professional fighters

with winning records. A few of my guys chuckled,

turning back to their drills, recognizing a joke when

they saw one.

Susan bristled at the laughter. 'Excuse me! Do

not laugh at my son! He is gifted. He has a warrior's

spirit! We went to that other gym across town, and

they were too afraid to let him spar on his first day.

They said it was a liability. I told them they were just

cowards who didn't want their top students

humiliated by a newcomer.'

I sighed inwardly. The 'other gym' she

mentioned was run by a good friend of mine, a

respected Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. If he had

turned them away, it meant Braden was not just

untrained, but likely a danger to himself and others.

Uncontrolled ego in a combat sport is a recipe for

disaster. 'Ma'am,' I said firmly, 'my colleague across

town was correct. Sparring is dangerous. Without

proper technique, control, and respect for your
