Higgins sighed. 'Ma'am, please calm down.'

Dave handed the iPad to the other officer. 'Here is

the high-definition security footage of the entire

incident, complete with audio.'

The two officers watched the footage. The gym

was quiet enough that we could hear the audio

playing from the iPad: Braden's insults, Susan's

demands, my calm refusal, the signing of the waiver,

and finally, the short, pitiful match. They watched

Braden swing wildly, miss, get taken down

effortlessly, and tap out to a bloodless choke.

Higgins handed the iPad back to Dave and

turned to Susan. His demeanor was no longer

patient. 'Ma'am, I have reviewed the evidence. What

I see here is a legal, mutually agreed-upon athletic

exhibition. Your son was not assaulted. In fact, he

was handled with extreme care by a professional

who could have legally hurt him much worse based

on this waiver.'

'But... but...' Susan sputtered, her face draining

of color as the reality of the situation finally pierced

her bubble of entitlement.

'Furthermore,' Higgins continued, his voice

stern, 'you came into this man's business, caused a

disturbance, and then filed a false police report

claiming attempted murder. Filing a false police

report is a crime, ma'am.'

Susan froze. The threat of actual legal

consequences shut her down instantly. Braden

scrambled to his feet, grabbing his mother's arm.

'Mom, let's just go. Please, let's just go,' he pleaded,

completely broken.

Higgins looked at me. 'Do you want to press

trespassing charges, Marcus?' I looked at the two of

them—a mother and son utterly defeated by their

own arrogance. 'No,' I said. 'I think they've learned

their lesson. But they are permanently banned from

this facility.'

Higgins nodded. 'You heard him. Leave. Now.

And if I get another call from you, ma'am, you'll be

leaving in handcuffs.'

Susan didn't say another word. She turned on

her heel and practically ran out the door, Braden

scurrying behind her, his brand new MMA shorts

sagging. The door clicked shut behind them. The

gym was silent for a few seconds.

Then, from the back of the room, one of the

fighters started a slow clap. It spread quickly,

evolving into a roar of laughter and applause. I

smiled, unwrapping my hands. The heavy, dark

energy they had brought into the gym evaporated,

replaced once again by the scent of hard work and

respect.

'Alright, show's over!' I yelled over the

applause, clapping my hands. 'Back to work! I want

to see fifty burpees from everyone for standing

around!' Groans erupted, but they were

accompanied by smiles. The sanctuary was safe. The

lesson was delivered. And the hubris of the Karen

and her spoiled son was left exactly where it

belonged: on the mats.
