cracking his knuckles in a theatrical display. 'You

asked for it, coach. Don't cry when I put you to

sleep.' I turned to my assistant coach, Dave, who was

standing nearby with a look of profound pity on his

face. 'Dave,' I said. 'Go get the waivers. The heavy-

duty ones.'

Dave returned a moment later with a

clipboard. Our standard waiver was comprehensive,

but this was the 'Full Contact Sparring Liability

Release'. It explicitly stated that the participant

acknowledged the risk of severe injury, including

concussions, broken bones, and dental trauma, and

absolved the gym and the sparring partner of all

legal and financial responsibility.

I handed the clipboard to Susan. 'Since he's

living under your roof and you're his guardian

angel, I suggest you read this carefully. By signing

this, you acknowledge that this is a full-contact

sparring session under MMA rules. You waive your

right to sue if he gets hurt. And he will get hurt.'

Susan snatched the clipboard, didn't even

glance at the text, and scrawled her signature at the

bottom. 'Empty threats,' she scoffed, handing it back.

'You're just trying to scare him. Braden, go get ready.'

Braden stripped off his shirt, revealing a pale,

completely unconditioned torso. He strapped on a

pair of MMA gloves he had brought with him—they

were pristine, stiff, and clearly had never been used

to hit a heavy bag.

I walked over to the mat and slipped off my

shoes. I didn't bother changing into my gear; my

shorts and rash guard were sufficient. I wrapped my

hands with practiced efficiency, the familiar ritual

calming my mind. I wasn't angry anymore. Anger is

a liability in a fight. I felt a cold, surgical focus. This

wasn't a fight to me; it was a demonstration. An

educational seminar on physics, biomechanics, and

humility.

The gym had formed a wide circle around the

central mat. Nobody was cheering; there was just a

tense, silent anticipation. Dave stepped in as the

referee. 'Alright,' Dave said, his voice echoing in the

quiet room. 'This is an exhibition sparring match.

MMA rules. No groin strikes, no eye pokes, no strikes

to the back of the head. Protect yourself at all times.

If you want to stop, you tap the mat, you tap your

opponent, or you say stop. Understand?'

I nodded. Braden smirked and bumped his

fists together. 'Yeah, yeah, whatever. Let's just go.'

Dave backed away. 'Fight.'

Braden immediately charged forward. He

didn't establish distance. He didn't set up a jab. He

just lowered his head and threw a massive, looping

overhand right. It was a punch designed for a

barroom brawl, thrown with all his weight and zero

balance. It was incredibly slow, telegraphed a mile

away, and left his entire left side exposed.

The world slowed down. This is what years of

training does to your perception. I didn't even need

to block. I simply took a half-step to the left, slipping

my head off the center line. Braden's fist sailed

harmlessly over my shoulder, the momentum
