He carried all three versions into Alison Greer's office in a leather case, and found, arranged on the desk between the window and the door, the whole material argument against smallness. The raw feed, printed, forty-seven messages, annotated in Alison's hand. The branch's reported log, nine complaints, in a font that suddenly looked like a child's forged excuse. Three hundred and twelve letters, or rather one letter and a count, the count provided by her own people and underlined twice. And a drugstore notebook, open to a page of clear handwriting, which Alison did not offer him to touch.

"Sit down, Colby," she said. "I'm going to tell you how this meeting goes, because I have had the weekend to learn it and you have had the weekend to do something else. You will not be managing the Riverside branch after today. That is decided, and it is not a decision about one afternoon in the rain, so do us both the courtesy of not defending the afternoon. It is a decision about a system. I have spent four days reading your system. I would like you to tell me, now that we are not performing for anyone, whose design it was."

He looked at the notebook. "I see Ms. Ferreira has been helpful."

"Ms. Ferreira has been a witness," Alison said. "For forty-one years, which is longer than the bank has had its current name, and she will retire, when she chooses, with every honor this institution can print. Do not make her your subject. You are your subject. The supplement. The threshold on the letters. The coding on the ombuds feed. Whose design?"

And here is the thing that must be said about Colby Strand, because the story is poorer if he is only a villain in a good suit. He had not taken a bribe. He had not stolen a dollar. He had wanted, with a want that had organized his whole adult life, to be the kind of man whose branch got chosen, whose numbers got read aloud, whose name got attached to an adjective, and he had discovered, in his forties, the terrible arithmetic by which the quickest way to raise an average is to stop counting the low numbers. It had not felt like cruelty, from inside the arithmetic. It had felt like triage. It had felt like the future. The people at the door had not been people, from inside the arithmetic. They had been traffic. And he had taught a twenty-four-year-old to see traffic, in four seconds, with warmth, and the warmth had been his proudest refinement, the thing he believed separated his branch's practice from mere rudeness.

"Mine," he said, at last, and the word cost him visibly, and Alison believed it was the first entirely unarranged thing she had ever heard him say. "The supplement is mine. The threshold, I set it. The coding — the branches were given discretion over the queue, I used the discretion. The region saw the numbers and didn't ask." He looked up. "That's true, Alison. You didn't ask."

"No," she said. "We didn't. That's in the report too, and it isn't your paragraph to hide in. The region's failure is the region's. Yours is the design." She closed the notebook gently, the way you close something that has finished its work and earned rest. "There will be an employment process, and it will be fair, and it will be short, because you have just made it honest, which is the only favor left in the room. You will not be reassigned to a client-facing role in this bank. Your bonus for the quarter is forfeit, and the Premier application for Riverside is withdrawn, by me, today, with a note in the file explaining that the branch's metrics for the period are not reliable and were produced by methods the bank repudiates. That note will follow the numbers wherever numbers go. Do you understand what that means? The beautiful figures are going to be introduced, everywhere they are ever read, by the manner of their making."

He understood. It was the one punishment precisely fitted to the crime, and both of them knew it, and he nodded, once, like a man taking a measurement.

"What happens to the girl?" he asked. "Danielle."

"She stays," Alison said. "She gets retrained, at the borrower's condition and at my own order, which agree for once. She asked a question in front of a witness that you could not answer, Colby. In the bank I intend to run, that's not a firing offense. That's the job description."
