My Wealthy Boss’s Black Belt Son Challenged Me — Unaware I Once Led an Elite Team
Chapter 2
I raised one hand.
“Stop.”
His face reddened.
His friends were watching now.
So were several guests.
I could feel the atmosphere changing.
People loved confrontation when they weren't the ones being hit.
Ethan raised his fists again.
“You got lucky.”
“No.”
“You moved.”
“Yes.”
“That means we're fighting.”
“No, it means you missed.”
His jaw tightened.
Then he attacked again.
This time he threw a combination.
Left.
Right.
Low kick.
It was better.
His jiu-jitsu background showed in his balance, but he had clearly spent enough time striking to become confident.
Still, confidence wasn't skill.
And skill wasn't experience.
Experience was something else entirely.
It was knowing what happened after the first punch.
Ethan didn't.
I did.
I stepped back from the right hand, checked the kick, and moved away.
I didn't counter.
I didn't want to hurt him.
That made him furious.
“Fight back!”
“No.”
He charged.
I caught his wrist.
That was all.
I turned his momentum slightly and guided him past me.
He stumbled.
Someone laughed.
Ethan stopped.
His face went pale.
I released his wrist.
“Enough.”
He stared at me.
“You grabbed me.”
“Yes.”
“You think that's funny?”
“No.”
He looked around.
His friends were no longer laughing.
They were confused.
Ethan had never been embarrassed in front of them.
He couldn't accept what was happening.
He rushed me again.
This time I knew I couldn't simply keep avoiding him.
I caught his arm, stepped behind his shoulder, and used his momentum to put him on the grass.
I didn't slam him.
I didn't strike him.
I simply placed him there.
Three seconds.
Maybe four.
That was enough.
Ethan landed on his back.
The crowd went silent.
He stared at the sky.
I stepped away.
“Stay down.”
He looked up at me.
“What are you?”
The question was almost whispered.
I didn't answer.
Richard appeared at the edge of the crowd.
His expression was unreadable.
“Jack.”
I turned.
“Yes, sir.”
“What happened?”
“Your son challenged me.”
Richard looked at Ethan.
Then back at me.
“Did you hurt him?”
“No.”
Richard nodded.
“Good.”
Ethan stood.
“Dad!”
Richard raised a hand.
“Not now.”
“But—”
“I said not now.”
Ethan looked furious.
I walked toward the Maybach.
Richard followed.
As soon as we were out of earshot, he said quietly, “You could have broken his arm.”
“Yes.”
“You didn't.”
“No.”
“Why?”
I opened the rear door.
“Because he didn't deserve it.”
Richard paused.
Then he gave me an unusual look.
For the first time since I'd met him, he seemed genuinely curious about me.
“You were military, weren't you?”
I looked at him.
“I was.”
“What branch?”
“Special operations.”
He stared.
“For how long?”
“Twelve years.”
Richard's eyebrows rose.
“And you never thought to mention that?”
“You never asked.”
He laughed softly.
“That's true.”
I closed the door.
“Where are we going?”
“Home.”
He got into the vehicle.
As I drove, I noticed his reflection in the mirror.
He was thinking.
I knew what he was thinking.
For eighteen months, Richard Cole had believed he hired a former soldier to protect him.
He was now beginning to realize he had hired something much more complicated.
But there was another reason I kept my history quiet.
A reason I had never told anyone.
Not even Sarah knew the whole story.
During my final deployment, I had led a team into a compound where everything went wrong.
We had gone in expecting six armed men.
There were twelve.
The firefight lasted less than five minutes.
It felt like five years.
One of my men died.
Another lost an eye.
I survived with a shattered knee and a ringing left ear.
But survival didn't feel like victory.
The man who died was named Daniel Price.
He was twenty-four.
Younger than Ethan.
I had promised his mother I'd bring him home.
I didn't.
That failure stayed with me.
After that night, I stopped believing violence proved anything.
It didn't make you strong.
It didn't make you honorable.
It simply created consequences.
That was why Ethan's challenge had irritated me.
Not because he had insulted me.
Because he had treated violence like entertainment.
He had no idea what violence actually cost.
But Ethan wasn't finished.
That night, while I was driving home from Richard's estate, my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
You embarrassed me today.
I didn't respond.
Another message arrived.
Tomorrow. Private gym. You and me.
I deleted it.
Then came a third.
I won't ask again.
I put the phone away.
I thought that would be the end of it.
I was wrong.
The Challenge
The next morning, I arrived at the Cole estate at six.
The gates opened automatically.
I drove toward the garage.
Ethan was already there.
He was wearing training shorts, a black rash guard, and the same belt around his waist.
He stood in the center of the private gym.
The building contained a full-size mat, heavy bags, weights, and a glass wall overlooking the gardens.
Ethan had apparently decided this was his arena.
“Jack.”
I stopped.
