My Wealthy Boss’s Black Belt Son Challenged Me — Unaware I Once Led an Elite Team
Chapter 5
Richard froze.
Another sound.
Glass breaking.
I moved toward the door.
“Stay here.”
“Jack—”
“Stay here.”
I stepped into the hallway.
The house was dark.
Then I saw movement.
Someone had entered through a side door.
I moved silently.
The intruder reached the office.
I intercepted him before he could enter.
He swung.
I blocked.
He reached for something inside his jacket.
I stopped his wrist.
The struggle lasted seconds.
Then he was on the floor.
I restrained him.
Richard emerged from the hallway.
He stared at the man.
Then at me.
The intruder laughed.
“You're wasting your time.”
I looked at him.
“Who sent you?”
He smiled.
“You're already too late.”
The Truth Behind the Challenge
The intruder refused to talk.
But he didn't need to.
His phone told us enough.
He had been communicating with someone inside Cole Industries.
Someone who had access to confidential information.
Someone who knew Richard's movements.
And someone who understood security.
Richard looked at me.
“Who?”
I stared at the message history.
There were dozens of conversations.
Most were encrypted.
But one name appeared repeatedly.
Victor Hale.
Richard's chief financial officer.
His oldest business partner.
The man who had worked beside him for fifteen years.
Richard's face hardened.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“He wouldn't.”
“People do strange things when billions are involved.”
Richard paced across the room.
“Why would Victor betray me?”
“Maybe he thinks he can replace you.”
Richard stopped.
Then another thought crossed his mind.
“Ethan.”
I looked at him.
“What about him?”
“Victor has been close to my son for years.”
That changed everything.
We found Ethan at the gym.
He was alone.
When he saw his father, he immediately knew something was wrong.
“Dad?”
Richard walked toward him.
“Have you been talking to Victor?”
Ethan froze.
“What?”
“Answer me.”
“About what?”
“Company information.”
Ethan looked at me.
Then away.
“Dad, I swear—”
“Did you give Victor access?”
“No.”
Richard's expression softened slightly.
“Then tell me what happened.”
Ethan sat down.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Finally:
“I wanted to prove myself.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“To whom?”
“To everyone.”
Ethan looked at me.
“Especially him.”
I frowned.
“Me?”
“You always looked at me like I was a child.”
“I never judged you.”
“You didn't have to.”
He stood.
“You knew what you were capable of. I knew what I was supposed to become. My father has billions. I have a black belt and a last name.”
His voice cracked.
“I wanted something that was mine.”
Richard stared at him.
“You should have told me.”
“I couldn't.”
“So you listened to Victor?”
Ethan shook his head.
“I didn't know he was using me.”
I stepped forward.
“How?”
Victor had convinced Ethan that Richard was planning to remove him from the company completely.
He told Ethan that unless he proved himself, he would never receive a meaningful position.
Then Victor asked Ethan to provide harmless information.
Travel schedules.
Meeting locations.
Security procedures.
Nothing that Ethan believed could cause damage.
But those small pieces had been combined into something much larger.
Ethan had unknowingly become an access point.
Victor had been using him.
I looked at Ethan.
“You didn't want to hurt your father.”
“No.”
“But you wanted to impress him.”
“Yes.”
“That made you vulnerable.”
He lowered his head.
“I know.”
For a moment, I saw something different in him.
Not the arrogant young man from the lawn.
Just a twenty-two-year-old who had made a serious mistake.
Richard sat beside him.
“You're my son.”
Ethan looked at him.
“You never had to earn that.”
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
“I thought I did.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
The room became silent.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Jack.”
The voice was calm.
Victor.
“You've become a problem.”
I said nothing.
“You should have remained invisible.”
“You made that impossible.”
He laughed.
“Your employer doesn't know what kind of man he hired.”
“I think he does now.”
“You think this ends here?”
“No.”
“Good.”
The call ended.
I immediately understood.
Victor wasn't running.
He was escalating.
And he knew where Richard would be tomorrow.
The annual investor conference.
Hundreds of people.
Multiple entrances.
Media.
Security teams.
Perfect chaos.
I looked at Richard.
“Cancel tomorrow.”
He shook his head.
“Can't.”
“Then we change the security plan.”
“Do whatever you need.”
I looked at Ethan.
“You stay here.”
He stood.
“No.”
I stared at him.
“I want to help.”
