The cables glowed bright.

Hot.

Under load.

I followed them.

They led directly toward the wellness center.

The sauna.

The HVAC system.

The fountain controls.

The decorative lighting.

Someone had connected Willow Creek's facilities to my transformer.

Without permission.

Without proper metering.

Without proper labeling.

And, judging by the installation, without much concern for safety.

I didn't touch a thing.

That was the first rule.

Never let anger make electrical decisions for you.

Instead, I photographed everything.

Thermal images.

Cable routes.

Meter readings.

Time stamps.

Load patterns.

For two weeks, I watched.

At 5:30 every morning, the wellness center's HVAC load increased.

At six, the gym lights came on.

Later, the sauna heaters kicked in.

At sunset, the fountains and monument sign started drawing power.

On weekends, the load surged.

And every spike appeared on my meter.

Willow Creek wasn't just using my electricity.

They were using my transformer to subsidize their luxury facilities.

By the time I finished calculating the losses, the stolen electricity alone had exceeded $3,400.

I printed everything.

Then I walked into the HOA office.

I was about to have a conversation with Sheila Marlowe.

Neither of us knew yet how much darkness that conversation would eventually create.

“You Are Stealing From Me”

The Willow Creek HOA office smelled like lemon cleaner and expensive candles.

A sign behind the reception desk read:

ELEVATED LIVING THROUGH SHARED STANDARDS.

I almost laughed.

Sheila was standing beside a conference table covered with harvest-festival decorations.

When she saw me, her smile disappeared.

“Mr. Hale,” she said. “We're not accepting walk-in complaints today.”

“This isn't a complaint.”

“If this concerns your exterior lights, you've already been notified—”

“Sheila.”

She stopped.

“You are stealing my electricity.”

Silence.

Then she laughed.

It wasn't a real laugh.

It was the kind people use when they're buying themselves three seconds to think.

“That is absurd.”

I placed my folder on her desk.

“These are photographs of unauthorized conductors running from my private transformer to your community center.”

For half a second, her expression changed.

A flicker.

Fear.

Recognition.

Then it vanished.

“I have no idea what you think you found.”

“I found a tap.”

“We have our own utility account.”

“You also have an illegal bypass.”

“That is a serious accusation.”

“It is a documented fact.”

She pushed the folder back toward me.

“If you believe there's an issue, contact the utility company.”

“I will.”
