Then at the transformer.

I had given them every reasonable opportunity.

Now I would protect my property.

But I wasn't going to act recklessly.

I wasn't going to cut live wires.

I wasn't going to pull cables out of the ground.

I wasn't going to create sparks, fire, or danger.

I followed safe isolation procedures on equipment under my control.

I documented everything.

I locked out my side.

I tagged it.

I photographed the final condition.

Then I stepped away.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then—

The community center lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then went dark.

The wellness center disappeared into darkness.

The fountains stopped.

The monument sign went black.

I expected that.

What I didn't expect was what happened next.

Across the nearest row of houses, porch lights dimmed.

Brightened.

Dimmed again.

Air-conditioning units coughed.

Security lights flickered.

The entrance gates stopped.

Then an alarm began screaming somewhere inside the neighborhood.

Another followed.

Then another.

Willow Creek went dark one section at a time.

Not the city.

Not the utility grid.

Just their badly interconnected private network.

I sat on my porch with a glass of bourbon.

For the first time in months, the transformer behind my workshop sounded normal.

Eight minutes later, my phone rang.

Sheila.

I answered.

“You did this.”

Her voice had lost all its polish.

“I isolated an unauthorized load from my private equipment.”

“The entire community center is down.”

“That sounds correct.”

“Two hundred homes are losing power!”

“That sounds like your contractor interconnected things badly.”

“You're going to prison.”

“For securing my property?”

“For tampering with utilities!”

“I didn't touch the utility company's equipment.”

“You caused a blackout!”

“No. Your illegal connection exposed a distribution problem.”

“Reconnect it now!”

“No.”

“Do it now!”

“Your unpaid balance is $3,412, plus inspection costs.”

“You miserable old man.”

“And since you ignored my deadline, future communication goes through my attorney.”

“I'm calling the police.”

“Good.”

Silence.

Then I added:

“Tell them why.”

She hung up.

She never called the police.

Instead, Willow Creek residents called everyone else.

Seventy-Two Hours

Within thirty minutes, the community Facebook page exploded.
