PART2 HOA Ordered My Power Cut Over a Fake Violation — They Didn’t Know I Was the Lawyer Who Took Down HOAs
Chapter 1
The Morning the House Went Dark
The power died at 9:21 on a July morning.
I remember the exact time because the clock on the microwave froze there.
First, the refrigerator went silent.
Then the air conditioner clicked off.
Finally, the little desk lamp in my father's old study disappeared into darkness.
For several seconds, I simply stood in the kitchen and listened.
Nothing.
No hum from the vents. No vibration from the refrigerator. No quiet electrical sounds that a person normally never notices until they disappear.
The house felt suddenly enormous.
And hot.
Outside, a white utility truck was parked beside the curb.
Two workers from Consolidated Power Services were packing their equipment near the meter box.
One of them avoided my eyes.
The other approached with a folded work order.
"We have an order to disconnect service," he said.
"For what?"
"Safety violation."
"Based on what inspection?"
He looked down at the paper.
"Complaint filed by the homeowners association."
I stared at him.
"Who filed it?"
He hesitated.
"Cedarfield Estates HOA."
I already knew the answer.
I looked across the street.
Melissa Carter stood in her driveway.
She was wearing a white blouse and pressed slacks, and she had the satisfied expression of someone watching a plan finally work.
When our eyes met, she called out.
"I hope you understand now, Marcus."
I folded the work order.
"Understand what?"
"This is what happens when a homeowner refuses to cooperate with the community."
I looked at the document again.
There was no inspection report.
No photograph.
No electrical citation.
No municipal code reference.
No signature from a licensed electrician.
Just an order based on a complaint.
A complaint from Melissa.
I took photographs of the truck, the meter, the disconnected seal, and Melissa watching from her driveway.
Then I went inside.
I opened my father's old fireproof safe.
Inside were documents I had not touched in fourteen months.
My bar credentials.
State board credentials.
Old case files.
Regulatory records.
Statutory notes.
A contact sheet.
I stared at it for several seconds.
Then I picked up the phone.
Melissa Carter had just made one enormous mistake.
She had picked the wrong house.
And, more importantly, she had picked the wrong homeowner.
