PART2 KAREN ORDERED ME TO SHORTEN MY DRIVEWAY—SO I BUILT A SPIRAL RAMP AROUND MY ENTIRE HOUSE
Chapter 1
The Tape Measure
The first time Karen Higgins told me my driveway was too long, she was standing in the middle of it with a tape measure stretched across the concrete.
Two orange traffic cones blocked my truck.
I had just come home from work.
The sun was low over Willow Crest, throwing long shadows across the lawn. My engine was still running when Karen raised one hand like a traffic officer.
“Stop there.”
I lowered the window.
“Why are you standing in my driveway?”
“I am conducting a compliance measurement.”
“That doesn't answer my question.”
Karen wore white slacks, a pale blue blouse, and the gold HOA president's pin she treated like a military decoration.
Her silver-blonde hair was perfectly still.
Even the wind seemed unwilling to argue with it.
She looked down at her tape measure.
“One hundred and twenty-seven feet.”
“You measured correctly.”
“The neighborhood standard is eighty-five.”
“There is no neighborhood standard for existing driveways.”
“There is now.”
I turned off the engine.
“That's convenient.”
Karen pointed toward the envelope beneath her clipboard.
“The board has determined that your driveway creates visual imbalance.”
“Visual imbalance?”
“Yes.”
“It extends too far into the property.”
“That is how I reach my garage.”
“You could shorten it.”
“And drive across the lawn?”
“The garage could be relocated.”
I stared at her.
My two-car garage was attached to the rear of the house.
“You're suggesting I move part of my house?”
“I am not offering construction advice.”
“You are standing in my driveway ordering construction.”
Her expression hardened.
“The board is requesting corrective action.”
“How many people complained?”
“The number is confidential.”
“That means one.”
“It means the board received concerns.”
“From you.”
She didn't answer.
I stepped out of the truck.
“Move the cones.”
“You need to sign this notice.”
“No.”
“Refusal to sign does not invalidate it.”
“Then you don't need my signature.”
I picked up one cone.
Karen grabbed the other.
“Alexander Reed, I strongly advise cooperation.”
“Alex is fine.”
“The notice gives you thirty days.”
“To do what?”
“Submit plans for a shorter driveway.”
“And if I don't?”
“Daily fines will begin.”
I looked past her.
The oak stood in the center of my front yard, its enormous branches spreading over the grass.
My father had helped restore this driveway.
He had been seventy-one at the time. Retired. Stubborn. Still capable of operating a concrete saw better than most professionals.
We had repaired the cracked edges, rebuilt the curve, and installed drainage so the tree's roots would remain protected.
He died two years later.
Every time I drove home, I followed the line we had shaped together.
Karen saw excess pavement.
I saw my father.
I took the envelope from beneath her clipboard.
“I'll attend the next board meeting.”
“Good.”
“I'll bring the original plans.”
“You should bring a correction proposal.”
I smiled.
“I'll bring something better.”
Karen misunderstood the smile.
She thought I had surrendered.
She had no idea what I was about to build.
A Rule That Didn't Exist
My name is Alexander Reed.
Most people call me Alex.
I'm forty-four years old, and I work as a transportation engineer for the state.
Karen knew I worked in engineering.
She just didn't know what kind.
She assumed I spent my days reviewing paperwork.
Sometimes I did.
Other days, I studied bridge loads, road grades, turning radii, drainage systems, retaining walls, vehicle movement, and traffic safety.
I understood something Karen didn't.
The shortest distance between two points isn't always the most useful route.
Willow Crest had been built outside Portland in the early 1990s.
There were 108 homes.
The developers had advertised wooded privacy and custom lot layouts.
The HOA had spent the following thirty years trying to make everything look identical.
Mailboxes had to match.
Roof colors came from an approved list.
Fences had strict height and material requirements.
Trees needed permission before removal.
Even front doors had only nine acceptable colors.
Karen thought nine was excessive.
She wanted six.
She had served on the board for seven years and had been president for four.
Before retirement, she had worked in compliance for an insurance company.
She spoke about regulations as if she personally invented them.
The official notice arrived by certified mail two days after our driveway confrontation.
