PART2 KAREN ORDERED ME TO SHORTEN MY DRIVEWAY—SO I BUILT A SPIRAL RAMP AROUND MY ENTIRE HOUSE
Chapter 7
“Tomorrow it could be seventy.”
Karen frowned.
“That is not our intention.”
“Intention isn't a rule.”
That was the turning point.
People could tolerate a rule aimed at someone else.
They resisted when they realized it could reach their own property.
The board appeal still failed.
Three to two.
Maya filed suit the next morning.
Judge Caroline Wells reviewed everything.
The original developer approval.
The new notice.
The meeting transcript.
The city permit.
The structural plans.
The HOA denial.
“What written covenant limits driveway length?” she asked.
The HOA attorney cited harmony.
The judge asked again.
He cited architectural discretion.
She asked whether the existing driveway had been approved.
“Yes.”
“Did the owner rely on that approval?”
“Yes.”
“Did the board identify a safety defect?”
“No.”
“Drainage violation?”
“No.”
“Encroachment?”
“No.”
“Then why was correction ordered?”
The attorney looked toward Karen.
“Aesthetic consistency.”
Judge Wells studied the spiral-ramp plan.
“Does this meet city code?”
“Yes.”
“Does it reduce the visible driveway extent?”
The attorney hesitated.
“Under the owner's interpretation.”
The judge looked at the transcript.
“It appears to be the board president's wording.”
Silence.
She issued a temporary injunction.
The HOA could not fine me over the existing driveway.
The city-approved ramp could proceed.
The board could enforce written standards.
It could not deny construction because someone personally disliked the design.
Outside the courthouse, Karen approached me.
“You think this makes you clever.”
“No.”
“The engineering made it clever.”
“This structure will humiliate the neighborhood.”
“Only if the neighborhood believes your pride is part of its property value.”
She stepped closer.
“You could still stop.”
“So could you.”
She walked away.
The Concrete Serpent
Construction began in spring.
The first crew removed sections of the old driveway.
Grass would eventually return there.
Surveyors marked the oak's root zone.
No equipment entered it.
Steel columns rose along both sides of the house.
Concrete footings went deep into the ground.
Curved forms traced the future ramp.
The neighborhood watched.
Children gathered behind the temporary fencing.
Residents brought lawn chairs.
Karen arrived every morning with a camera.
She photographed trucks.
Measured barriers.
Counted workers.
Called the city about noise at 8:03 a.m.
Work was permitted after eight.
She complained about dust.
The contractor installed additional screens.
She complained about street parking.
We rented an off-site lot for workers.
She complained that the crane arm created an unauthorized skyline feature.
The permit covered temporary equipment.
Every complaint improved our documentation.
None stopped the work.
The foreman was Luis Alvarez.
He had built parking structures, curved bridges, and hillside roads.
One morning, he watched Karen observing from across the street.
“She is the reason?”
“She is the catalyst.”
Luis smiled.
“She looks expensive.”
“Mostly to the HOA.”
The first ramp section rose six feet.
Then ten.
Then fifteen.
Concrete curved around the house in a smooth arc.
Steel guardrails followed.
Cedar screens softened the structure.
Planters were built between the support columns.
Mateo selected vines that would eventually cover much of the exterior.
The lower level became a shaded walkway.
Rainwater channels disappeared beneath the deck.
