The afternoon sun was beginning to soften over Maplewood Park.

Children were playing near the fountain.

Parents pushed strollers along the walking path.

Joggers passed beneath the tall trees.

And beneath the largest oak in the park sat a fifteen-year-old boy named Alex Davis.

He wore a gray hoodie, jeans, and an old pair of sneakers.

His backpack rested beside him.

His phone was in his hand.

Alex checked the screen again.

3:42 PM.

He sighed.

His mother was supposed to pick him up fifteen minutes ago.

He sent her another message.

Still coming?

A few seconds later, his phone vibrated.

Running late. Ten more minutes. Stay where you are.

Alex smiled.

Okay, Mom.

He leaned back against the tree.

He had no idea that within minutes, flashing police lights would surround him.

And he certainly had no idea that the woman who called them would soon regret every assumption she had made.

Across the park, an older woman sat alone on a bench.

Her name was Eleanor Jacobs.

She had lived in Maplewood for more than thirty years.

She considered herself someone who knew the neighborhood.

She knew which families lived nearby.

She knew which streets were quiet.

She knew which children played in the park.
