A woman stepped out.
She wore a dark business suit.
Her expression was calm.
But her eyes were furious.
Alex recognized her immediately.
“Mom.”
The woman walked toward the group.
“Officers.”
Grayson turned.
His expression changed.
“Mayor Davis?”
Alex looked down.
The woman was his mother.
Laura Davis, Mayor of Maplewood.
She walked directly toward her son.
“Alex.”
“I'm okay.”
She placed a hand on his shoulder.
Then she looked at the officers.
“What happened?”
Grayson explained.
“We received a call about a suspicious individual.”
Laura slowly turned toward Eleanor.
Then back toward her son.
“This suspicious individual is my fifteen-year-old son.”
Silence.
Eleanor's face suddenly changed.
