"Why?"

"Because it was never about the badge."

Daniel waited.

"It was about remembering who we were before they tried to change the story."

The call ended.

Daniel stood alone in the fading sunlight.

For the first time in thirty-eight years, he didn't feel like a man waiting for an answer.

He had one.

His brother had survived.

And the truth was finally coming home.

Three months later, Bellwood was no longer the same town.

The investigation became statewide.

Old cases were reopened.

Financial records were examined.

Former officers were questioned.

Several convictions were reviewed.

People who had once believed the official story finally learned that it had been incomplete.

Edward Crane was arrested.

Other names appeared in the investigation.

Some people cooperated.

Others denied everything.

But the evidence was too strong to disappear.

Thomas Mercer became a symbol of something much larger than one missing police officer.

He became proof that truth could survive even when people tried to bury it.

Daniel testified before investigators.

He told them everything.

The badge.

The ledger.

The photograph.

The recordings.

The hidden documents.

And the phone call.

But he refused to reveal where Thomas was living.

That was the one promise he made to his brother.

Several months later, Daniel received another letter.

This time, there was a return address.

Inside was a photograph.

Daniel opened it.

Thomas was standing beside a lake.

His hair was almost completely gray.

He looked older.

Tired.

But alive.

On the back of the photograph were five words.

Maybe it's time to come home.

Daniel smiled.

The next morning, he drove to the lake.

It was a long journey.

He didn't know exactly what would happen when he arrived.

Would the brothers know how to speak to each other after thirty-eight years?

Would the anger disappear?

Would the lost years ever stop hurting?

He didn't know.

But he knew something else.

Some doors only open once.

And some opportunities arrive so late that you have to choose whether to accept them anyway.

Daniel reached the lake near sunset.

A man stood near the water.

Older.

Thinner.

Gray-haired.

Daniel stopped the car.

The man turned.

Their eyes met.

Neither spoke.

Then Thomas smiled.

Daniel walked toward him.
