Ana read the pages over twice, and then she looked up at Rosalind, and she said, "You could have offered me money for this, and I would have refused it, and we would still be standing in the street. You offered me the thing itself instead. That is why I signed."

"I offered you what was yours," Rosalind said. "I am only sorry it took me eighteen years to learn the difference between giving and returning."

Miren, who had said very little all day, reached across the table and covered both their hands with her own, and her hands were rough and warm, and she said, in her careful English, "My sister made that coat for a baby she thought she would lose. She did not lose her. She lost her life, and her husband's life, and her camp, but she did not lose the baby. The baby is here. The baby is a teacher. That is enough for a lifetime."

After the papers were signed, Rosalind walked alone to the jailhouse. She had not planned to. She had planned to go home, to the ranch house, to the quiet of her own rooms. But her feet took her to the jailhouse instead, and she found Duncan sitting on the narrow bed in his cell, his hands in his lap, looking at the wall as if it were a country he had never visited. The sheriff, seeing her, stepped outside without a word, which was a kindness Rosalind would remember.

Duncan looked up when she came in, and for a moment neither of them spoke. Then he said, "I suppose you have come to tell me what I already know."

"No," Rosalind said. "I have come to tell you what you do not know. You thought the fire would end the matter. It did not end it. It only buried it, and buried things grow. The papers survived. The baby survived. The family survived. You spent eighteen years managing my ranch and stealing my cattle, and all the while the truth was sitting in an unclaimed trunk in Edith Marlow's depot, waiting for someone to open it. I opened it. That is all."

Duncan's face worked, and he looked down at his hands. "Will you come to the trial?"

"I will come," Rosalind said, "and I will tell the truth there, as I told it today. No more, and no less. What the law does with you after that is the law's business, not mine. I will not ask for hanging, and I will not ask for mercy. I will ask for the record to be straight, because the record is what outlives us all."

She turned to go, and he said, quickly, as if the words might escape him if he did not say them now, "Mrs. Carmichael — Rosalind — I am sorry. Not for the cattle. For the fire. For Elias. For the eighteen years."

Rosalind stopped at the door, and she did not turn around, because she knew that if she turned around she would see a man she had trusted for half her life, and she did not want to carry that image home with her. "I know," she said. "And I am sorry too, Duncan. I am sorry I believed you. That is my part, and I will carry it. Goodbye."

She walked out into the evening, and Tomas was waiting for her on the boardwalk, and he fell into step beside her without asking where she had been, and they walked together toward the ranch road as the light went gold over Juniper Creek, and the town behind them settled into its evening sounds — a dog barking, a wagon creaking, a child calling from a doorway — and it sounded, for the first time in a long time, like a town that had told itself the truth and could now get on with the business of living.

Before she left town, Rosalind stopped at the schoolhouse, where Ana had gone to put away the primers for the night. The room was small and plain, with a stove in the corner and a map on the wall that was already curling at the edges, and Ana was standing at the teacher's desk with the yellow baby clothes folded in her hands, looking at them as if she were trying to memorize something she had
