"How did she do that?"
The Sensei swallowed hard, his eyes fixed on the small, bare foot that commanded his life. He slowly looked up into Emma's cold, emotionless eyes. The arrogance was entirely gone, replaced by a desperate, agonizing need to understand the anomaly before him.
"Who taught you?" he rasped, his voice trembling in the quiet room.
Emma remained perfectly silent, her expression unchanging.
"Who are you?" he asked, the words echoing with total, irreversible defeat.
For a long, agonizing moment, Emma held the pose, ensuring the lesson was permanently etched into the master's soul. Then, with the exact same effortless grace, she lowered her leg. She didn't gloat. She didn't smile. She simply turned her back on the kneeling man.
She walked slowly back to the edge of the mat, stepping off the white surface and slipping her feet smoothly back into her sneakers. Her mother stood completely frozen, her eyes wide with a complex mixture of terror and overwhelming awe. Emma gently reached out and took her mother's calloused hand.
