That was the agony the standing final had been designed, in its old wisdom, to contain. From the firing line, with the naked eye, a rusty rectangle at that distance in that light does not obligingly report itself. It does not fall for an ordinary central hit. It does not ring in a way that travels cleanly back over gravel when the wind is taking sound and shredding it for the mountains. It stands on its two legs in the sand and keeps its counsel, and the shooter stands on her two legs in the gravel and must keep hers, and between them the whole apparatus of scoring — lenses, binoculars, walks down the lane, clipboards, incredulity — has to do the travelling.
Willa lowered the rifle slowly.
Behind the rope, nobody applauded, because nobody knew whether there was anything to applaud. The sound of the shot had given them an event; it had not given them a result, and a crowd deprived of a result becomes for a few seconds an oddly honest thing, all faces and no performance. Phones stayed up out of optimism. A man's hat was in his hands though he did not remember taking it off. The woman in the yellow hat said, at the volume of prayer, "Did she—" and then stopped, because the sentence had nowhere accurate to go.
She could feel her left knee now. It had resumed its citizenship and was reporting a fine tremor, which she absorbed by shifting nothing at all except the distribution of an ounce of weight, a cheat so practised it had ceased to be cheating and become style. Her palms asked for air. She did not open her hands. Opening your hands invites opinion. She breathed once, fully, the kind of breath that reaches the sore places, and let the sun be hot and the shirt be damp and the bun pull at its one escaped strand. Weather. It was all arriving back as weather, in a rush, the way a town returns after an evacuation siren turns out to be a test.
"Shot away," Grant called from the table, loud and neutral and exactly on time. His voice on the amplifier had the mercy of a timetable. "First shot away for Callen. Hold the line."
Hold the line. As if there were anywhere for the line to go. As if she would wander off into the desert with her father's notebook aphorisms and her mother's voicemail and her own enormous heartbeat and take up goat farming. The formality steadied her again, absurdly, and she felt the beginnings of a smile threaten the corners of her controlled face and suppressed it not because joy would be unseemly but because she did not yet know what the joy was about. A shot away was not a shot landed. She had lived long enough in other people's underestimations to refuse to perform her own.
Danny's voice came from behind her — closer than she had expected, though he had not crossed anything; sound in open ground travels with a disloyal intimacy.
"Good follow-through," he said. It was pitched for her and it was pitched, maybe, for whoever would replay the clip, but there was something unvarnished running underneath the habit of performance. It sounded like a sentence he had said because it was true before he could decide whether saying it served him. Willa filed it, without gratitude and without suspicion, in the place where she filed weather of the genuinely interesting kind. Danny Mercer knew a follow-through when he saw one. That had never been the question between them. The question was whether knowledge could outrun certainty in a man who had built his tent inside certainty and liked the view.
She did not answer. Answering would have been a door and she was still inside the room of the final.
Her eye, unaided now, went back to the plate. Nothing. Sand, legs, rectangle, the shimmer industriously manufacturing instability over all of it. And yet — she felt the familiar, unreliable elation nibble at the base of her ribs, and she let it nibble without feeding it. She had shot well. That was knowable from inside the shot in the way a singer knows, before the hall responds, that the note was clean. The internal testimony was inadmissible and she knew that too. Ranges ran on external testimony. That was their decency. A woman did not get to declare her own centre. The men before her had not been allowed to. She would not ask to be the exception to verification; she would ask, silently and completely, to be included in it.
At the officials' table the quality of stillness changed its composition.
Willa heard the small strap-creak before she dared to let her peripheral attention name it. Leather against a black jacket. The particular stealth of a large object being lifted with both hands by a man who has lifted it ten thousand times and respects its weight as a form of honesty. Chief Hargrove was raising his binoculars.
Not fully. Not yet to his eyes. Up to his chest, held there a moment while he said something to Grant that did not carry — though Grant's head turned toward the distant plate with the slow obedience of a man being asked to look at something he had been looking at all day with a new set of expectations. The clipboard came all the way down onto the table. His pen rolled an inch and was stopped by his thumb without his eyes attending to it.
The crowd scented it. A crowd behind a rope in the sun is a single animal with a hundred heads when it scents significance, and its murmur changed pitch, thinned, and organised itself forward into the constraint of the line. Phones lifted in unconscious unison, a small forest of black rectangles swaying once and steadying. Someone told someone else to get the old man, get the old man in the shot, and somebody else, wiser, said, "Just keep it on *her*."
Hargrove brought the binoculars the rest of the way up.
