Enough to convince him that he had found her rhythm.

Trevor drove forward.

Rachel shifted.

Her right foot moved half a step.

Her hips turned.

Trevor's weight traveled somewhere it wasn't supposed to go.

He dropped to one knee.

Rachel's arm appeared around his wrist.

For an instant, nobody understood what had happened.

Then Trevor tried to pull away.

Rachel adjusted her grip.

Trevor froze.

His face changed.

He slapped the mat.

Once.

Twice.

Tap.

Sam stopped the timer.

Nine seconds.

Silence.

Rachel released him immediately.

Trevor stood.

His face was red.

"What was that?"

Rachel looked at him.

"A tap."

A teenager near the wall covered his mouth.

Mason stepped forward.

"Move."

Trevor turned.

"My turn."

And suddenly the room understood.

This wasn't going to be a joke.

It was going to be a lesson.

But nobody yet knew who would be learning it.

The Wrestler

Mason Cole had watched Trevor lose.

That mattered.

Because Mason understood something Trevor hadn't.

Rachel wasn't simply lucky.

She had baited him.

Trevor had been given an opening that wasn't an opening at all.

Mason had spent too many years wrestling to make the same mistake.

He stepped onto the center of the mat.

His shoulders relaxed.

His hands lowered.

Unlike Trevor, he wasn't smiling.

He looked at Rachel for several seconds.

Then he glanced at Sam.

"Twenty seconds?"

"Twenty."

Mason nodded.

He crouched slightly.

Rachel watched his posture.

"You've wrestled," she said.

Mason smiled.

"Now you want to talk?"

"No."

"Good."

Sam reset the timer.

Mason took one slow breath.

The room became quiet again.

Then he attacked.

He didn't reach high.

He didn't grab wildly.

He shot low.

His hands wrapped around Rachel's legs with perfect timing.

Rachel immediately sprawled.

Mason drove forward.

For the first time that evening, Rachel was forced backward.

The students leaned closer.

Mason's forehead pressed against her hip.

His arms locked.

He began driving her toward the mat.

"Ten seconds!" someone shouted.

Mason heard it.

He didn't care.

His strategy was simple.

Don't let her create space.

Don't let her establish grips.

Don't let her use whatever strange trick had caught Trevor.

Pressure.

Weight.

Position.

The foundations of wrestling.

Rachel's right hand touched the mat.

Mason thought he had her.

Then he felt something change.

Her weight disappeared.

Not literally.

But the pressure against him shifted so quickly that his body followed momentum that no longer existed.

Rachel stepped sideways.

Mason's grip slipped.

He corrected.

Too late.

She rotated around his shoulder.

His own forward drive carried him past her.

He tried to recover.

Rachel's leg hooked behind his.

Mason stumbled.

One second later, he was seated.

Two seconds later, Rachel had his arm.

Mason knew immediately.

He tried to roll.

Rachel followed.

He tried to stack.

She moved with him.

He tried to pull his elbow free.

Nothing.

The timer had not yet sounded.

Mason's eyes widened.

Rachel tightened the position.

Mason slapped the mat.

Tap.

Sam stopped the timer.

Eleven seconds.

For the second time, the room went silent.

Rachel released him.

Mason rolled onto his knees.

He stared at his own hand.

Then at Rachel.

"What are you?"

Rachel smiled faintly.

"A woman who came to class."

Mason shook his head.

"That's not what I mean."

"I know."

Trevor was standing near the wall now.

His arms were crossed.

His embarrassment had been replaced by concentration.

Luke stepped onto the mat.

Mason looked at him.

"Don't rush her."

Luke nodded.

"I wasn't planning to."

Mason stood.

He walked past Rachel without speaking.

Trevor approached him.

"What happened?"

Mason lowered his voice.

"She moves before you finish moving."

Trevor frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you're not fighting where you think you're fighting."

Trevor looked back at Rachel.

She was standing quietly.

No celebration.

No grin.

No attempt to humiliate them.

That bothered him more than anything.

Luke stepped forward.

He was the youngest of the three.

He had also been watching most carefully.

Unlike Trevor and Mason, he didn't underestimate Rachel anymore.

He had seen enough.

He understood that strength wouldn't solve this.

Neither would pressure.

He would need timing.

He would need deception.

Most importantly, he needed to make sure Rachel couldn't predict him.

Luke looked at Sam.

"Twenty seconds?"

"Twenty."

Luke nodded.

He turned toward Rachel.

"You ready?"

Rachel raised her hands.

"Yes."

Luke smiled.

"Good."

Sam reset the clock.

"Go."

Luke didn't attack.

He circled.

Rachel circled with him.

Left.

Right.

Left.

The students watched.

Five seconds disappeared.

Luke suddenly stepped in.

Rachel shifted backward.

He stopped.

She stopped.

Luke changed direction.

Rachel followed.

Ten seconds.

Luke feinted toward the legs.

Rachel didn't bite.

He smiled.

"Interesting."

Rachel said nothing.

He attacked again.

This time, he went higher.

Rachel raised her guard.

Luke rotated around her.

His hand reached for her collar.

Rachel moved.
