Luke followed.

His foot slipped behind hers.

For a fraction of a second, Rachel's balance changed.

Luke saw it.

He attacked.

He caught her arm.

He spun.

He tried to pull her into a familiar submission.

The students gasped.

Luke had found the position he wanted.

Except Rachel was smiling.

Luke realized why.

She had allowed it.

His stomach dropped.

Rachel turned her wrist.

Luke's grip weakened.

She stepped inside his stance.

Then she moved behind him.

Luke spun.

Rachel was already gone.

He reached.

Nothing.

She ducked beneath his arm.

Her shoulder touched his chest.

Her foot swept behind his ankle.

Luke fell backward.

Rachel followed.

Her arm wrapped around his neck.

Luke immediately grabbed her wrist.

Three seconds remained.

He tried to roll.

Rachel shifted.

His breathing tightened.

He tapped.

The timer showed seventeen seconds.

Sam stopped it.

Luke lay still for a moment.

Then he released a breath.

He sat up.

Rachel offered him a hand.

Luke looked at it.

Then took it.

"That," he said quietly, "was not luck."

Rachel shook her head.

"No."

Luke stared at her.

"Who trained you?"

Rachel's expression changed.

For the first time that evening, the calmness in her eyes became something else.

Something older.

Something heavier.

Before she could answer, a voice came from the edge of the mat.

"Rachel?"

Everyone turned.

It was Samuel Harris.

But he wasn't looking at the three black belts.

He was looking directly at her.

And there was recognition in his face.

The Name on the Wall

Rachel slowly turned toward Sam.

The gym had become completely still.

"Yes?"

Sam looked at her for several seconds.

Then he glanced toward the far wall.

Iron Bridge had a long row of framed photographs.

Championship teams.

Seminar instructors.

Old students.

Former competitors.

The pictures went back more than fifteen years.

Rachel followed Sam's gaze.

Her expression tightened.

One photograph hung slightly higher than the others.

It showed a younger Sam standing beside a woman in a black belt.

The woman was smiling.

Her hair was shorter.

Her face younger.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

Rachel's eyes.

Trevor looked from the picture to Rachel.

Then back again.

"Wait."

Sam walked toward the wall.

He stopped beneath the photograph.

"This is why I recognized you."

Rachel said nothing.

Mason stepped closer.

"Who is that?"

Sam looked at him.

"Her sister."

Rachel closed her eyes briefly.

The room seemed to inhale.

Luke looked at the photograph.

Then at Rachel.

"Your sister trained here?"

"No," Rachel said.

"She did."

Rachel's voice was quiet.

"She trained everywhere."

Sam nodded.

"Her name was Anna Monroe."

Trevor stared at Rachel.

"Was?"

Rachel looked at the photograph.

"She died eight years ago."

Nobody spoke.

Even the students who had been whispering earlier lowered their voices.

Sam's expression became distant.

"Anna was one of the most talented grapplers I ever knew."

Rachel smiled sadly.

"She hated hearing that."

"Why?"

"Because she thought talent was an excuse people used when they didn't want to talk about work."

Mason crossed his arms.

"She taught you?"

Rachel nodded.

"She taught me everything."

Luke looked at her hands.

"Then why did you say you were new?"

Rachel shrugged.

"Because I am new here."

Trevor looked frustrated.

"You knew what we were going to do."

"No."

"You knew we'd challenge you."

"No."

"Then why were you watching everyone?"

Rachel answered immediately.

"Because that's how I learn."

Trevor shook his head.

"You could have told us."

Rachel looked at him.

"Told you what?"

"That you were experienced."

"I was asked whether I was new."

"You said yes."

"I am new."

Mason frowned.

"You're playing with words."

Rachel's expression hardened.

"No. I'm refusing to play the game you wanted."

That silenced him.

Sam walked toward the center.

"Rachel, why did you really come here?"

She looked at him.

"Anna talked about Iron Bridge."

Sam's eyes softened.

"She did?"

"Years ago."

"Before she passed?"

Rachel nodded.

"She told me there was a gym here where people cared about the art more than the medals."

Sam looked down.

"I wish she had come back."

"She wanted to."

"What stopped her?"

Rachel hesitated.

"Life."

Nobody asked further.

For a moment, the tension disappeared.

Then Trevor spoke.

"So you came here because of her."

"Partly."

"And the challenge?"

Rachel looked at him.

"I didn't come here looking for one."

Trevor lowered his head.

"I started it."

"Yes."

"I owe you an apology."

Rachel smiled.

"You do."

A few students laughed.

Trevor almost smiled.

Then Sam spoke.

"There's something else."

Rachel looked at him.

Sam walked to a storage cabinet and pulled out an old black belt.

He held it carefully.

"This belonged to Anna."

Rachel's breath caught.

"Why do you have that?"

"She left it here."

"Why?"

"She said she didn't want it."

Rachel shook her head.

"That doesn't sound like her."

"She said belts didn't matter."

Rachel looked at the black belt.

"That sounds exactly like her."

Sam approached.

"She told me something once."

"What?"

"She said the strongest person in the room was usually the person least interested in proving it."

Rachel smiled.

"She said that to me too."

Trevor glanced toward the belt.
