"Good."

Rachel looked at him.

"That's it?"

"No."

He pointed toward her hands.

"Your left hand."

She moved it.

"Too high."

She lowered it.

"Now your right foot."

She shifted.

"Better."

Rachel laughed.

"You haven't changed."

"I've changed everything."

"What?"

"I learned that students don't need more techniques."

Rachel nodded.

"They need fewer mistakes."

Reyes smiled.

"Now you're teaching."

They sat together afterward.

Rachel told him about Iron Bridge.

About Trevor.

Mason.

Luke.

About the night three black belts surrounded her.

Reyes laughed so hard he started coughing.

"You submitted all three?"

"Yes."

"How long?"

"Thirty-seven seconds."

He shook his head.

"Show-offs."

Rachel smiled.

"They started it."

"Of course they did."

Then Reyes became serious.

"Are they good?"

Rachel thought.

"Yes."

"Are they arrogant?"

"Sometimes."

"Then they are still students."

Rachel nodded.

Reyes looked toward the empty academy.

"I built this place because I thought people needed somewhere to fight."

He paused.

"Eventually I learned they needed somewhere to become less afraid."

Rachel listened.

"Fear makes people cruel."

She nodded.

"Fear of losing."

"Fear of looking weak."

"Fear of being wrong."

Reyes looked at her.

"That is why you beat those men."

Rachel frowned.

"Technique?"

"No."

"Timing?"

"No."

"Experience?"

"Partly."

He smiled.

"You weren't afraid of them."

Rachel looked down.

"Neither were they."

"Exactly."

He pointed at her.

"You understood that they were afraid of losing."

Rachel was silent.

Reyes continued.

"They were fighting you."

"You were fighting their expectations."

That sentence stayed with her.

Later, before she left, Reyes gave her something.

His old black belt.

Rachel stared at it.

"I can't take this."

"You can."

"It belongs here."

"No."

He folded her fingers around it.

"It belongs with someone who understands what it means."

Rachel looked at him.

"What does it mean?"

Reyes smiled.

"Nothing."

She laughed.

"That's very you."

"The belt means nothing."

He looked at her.

"What you do with what you learned means everything."

Rachel hugged him.

At the door, she stopped.

"Thank you."

Reyes nodded.

"For what?"

"Everything."

He waved her away.

"Go teach someone."

Rachel smiled.

Then she left.

Three weeks later, Daniel Reyes died peacefully.

Rachel attended the funeral.

So did Sam.

So did Trevor, Mason, and Luke.

They stood together.

Not as black belts.

Not as instructors.

As students.

The New Beginning

Six months later, Iron Bridge Jiu-Jitsu held an open seminar.

The gym was packed.

People had traveled from different cities.

Some came because they knew Sam.

Others came because they had heard about Rachel.

Most had heard the story.

Three black belts.

One new woman.

Less than a minute.

Three taps.

The story had grown with every retelling.

By the sixth month, someone online had claimed Rachel defeated them simultaneously.

Someone else claimed she had been a secret world champion.

Another person said she was a former military operative.

All of it was nonsense.

Rachel never corrected anyone.

She simply kept teaching.

That Saturday morning, she stood in the center of the mat.

Trevor stood beside her.

Mason was helping beginners pair up.

Luke was adjusting the timer.

Sam watched from the wall.

Rachel looked at the students.

"Today we're going to talk about balance."

A young white belt raised his hand.

"Are we going to learn the technique you used against Trevor?"

Trevor laughed.

Rachel smiled.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because the technique wasn't the important part."

The student looked confused.

"What was?"

Rachel pointed toward Trevor.

"His weight."

Trevor nodded.

Then Mason.

"His pressure."

Mason nodded.

Then Luke.

"His timing."

Luke smiled.

"And my ego."

The entire room laughed.

Rachel shook her head.

"That too."

She crouched and demonstrated.

"Jiu-jitsu is not magic."

She placed her hand on the mat.

"It's information."

She shifted her weight.

"You feel something."

She moved.

"You respond."

She looked at the students.

"The goal isn't to be stronger than everyone."

She stood.

"It's to understand the moment better than the person you're facing."

Nobody spoke.

Rachel continued.

"And if you train long enough, you eventually discover something more important."

"What?"

She looked around.

"The person you're fighting is usually not your real opponent."

Trevor smiled.

Rachel continued.

"Your real opponent is your impatience."

Mason nodded.

"Your fear."

Luke added.

"Your ego."

Sam smiled.

"And your assumptions."

Rachel looked at him.

"Exactly."

The class began.

Hours passed.

People rolled.

They struggled.

They laughed.

They tapped.

They stood up.

They tried again.

At the end of the seminar, Rachel sat against the wall.

Trevor joined her.
