"Yes."
The honesty made Madison's expression harden.
"Why?"
"Because we're training."
Madison looked at Daniel.
He did not intervene.
Instead, he said, "Reset."
They continued.
This time, Madison tried to close the distance.
Nia did not retreat.
She stepped diagonally, allowing Madison's forward momentum to carry her slightly past the centerline.
A light touch landed on Madison's shoulder.
Nia moved away.
Again.
Madison turned.
"How are you getting there?"
Nia lowered her gloves.
"Where?"
"Outside my lead side."
"Your front foot tells me where you're going."
Madison looked down at her stance.
Then back up.
"That's all?"
"Not all. But it's a start."
For a moment, Madison looked as though she wanted to argue.
Then she returned to her stance.
"Show me."
Nia demonstrated slowly.
She placed her feet, shifted her weight, and pointed toward Madison's lead foot.
"When you step forward, your shoulder moves first, but your weight follows your foot. If you watch the shoulder, you react late. If you watch the whole structure, you can see the direction earlier."
Madison tried it.
Her first attempt was awkward.
Her second was better.
Her third was almost correct.
Daniel smiled.
"That's useful work."
Madison looked at Nia.
"Again."
They repeated the drill.
This time, Madison moved more carefully.
For the first time, the round felt less like a challenge and more like a lesson.
But Madison was not ready to admit that.
Brooke's turn came next.
She entered the grappling area with a different expression.
She was not smiling.
"Can we work from standing?"
Nia nodded.
"Sure."
Brooke adjusted her belt.
"Light resistance?"
"Whatever Daniel approves."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Controlled entries only. No explosive throws."
Brooke nodded.
They began hand-fighting.
Brooke reached for a collar tie.
Nia turned her shoulder and redirected the grip.
Brooke tried again, this time reaching for an underhook.
Nia moved her arm inside and established position first.
The exchange was brief.
Brooke disengaged.
"You're getting inside before I do."
Nia nodded.
"You're reaching from too far away."
Brooke frowned.
"Meaning?"
"Your hands arrive before your feet."
Brooke considered that.
Nia demonstrated by stepping closer before reaching.
"Your body needs to be in position before your arms ask for control."
Brooke tried again.
This time, she moved her feet first.
Her hand found Nia's shoulder.
Nia allowed the contact, then turned her body and cleared the grip.
Brooke tried to follow.
Nia shifted her hips.
Brooke's forward pressure carried her slightly off balance.
Nia guided her down onto one knee.
Not a throw.
Not a slam.
Just a controlled loss of position.
Brooke paused.
Nia released immediately and stepped back.
"You okay?"
Brooke nodded.
"Yes."
She looked at the mat.
Then at Nia.
"Again."
They repeated the exchange.
Brooke changed her entry.
Nia adapted.
Brooke tried a snap-down.
Nia widened her base and moved her head away from the pressure.
Brooke switched to a body lock.
Nia turned her hips and created space.
The more Brooke tried, the more she realized that Nia was not relying on one favorite technique.
She was reading the entire exchange.
Finally, Brooke stepped back.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"How long have you been grappling?"
Nia considered the question.
"A long time."
"That's not an answer."
Nia smiled faintly.
"It's the one I have right now."
Brooke almost smiled.
"Fair enough."
Tessa chose to work on transitions.
She had expected Nia to be strongest in either striking or grappling.
She wanted to know what happened when the two disciplines met.
Daniel approved a controlled sequence.
Tessa began with a light combination.
Nia defended.
Tessa stepped into a clinch.
Nia adjusted her position.
Tessa attempted to turn the exchange into a takedown.
Nia moved her hips away and redirected her.
The sequence ended with both women standing.
Tessa looked frustrated.
"You're always one step ahead."
Nia shook her head.
"Not always."
"Then what am I missing?"
"You're thinking about the next technique before you've finished the one you're doing."
Tessa frowned.
Nia continued.
"Your first strike creates a reaction. Your second strike needs to respond to that reaction. But you already decided what you want to do before you know what I gave you."
Tessa looked toward Daniel.
He nodded.
"That's a good observation."
Tessa returned her attention to Nia.
"So I should wait?"
"Not wait. Pay attention."
Tessa tried again.
This time, she delivered a jab, noticed Nia's slight shift, and adjusted her next movement.
The exchange improved.
Nia still controlled the distance, but Tessa found a path inside.
She touched Nia's shoulder.
"Got you."
Nia smiled.
"You did."
Tessa stepped back, pleased.
It was a small success.
But it was real.
The rounds ended shortly after seven-thirty.
The gym began to settle into its evening rhythm.
Some members moved toward the showers. Others continued drilling.
Madison sat on the edge of the mat, breathing hard.
Brooke was reviewing the hand-fighting exchange in her head.
Tessa was quietly practicing the transition Nia had shown her.
Daniel approached Nia.
"Good session."
"Thank you."
"You have a way of making complicated things look simple."
Nia shrugged.
"Most complicated things become simpler when you stop trying to force them."
Daniel smiled.
"That's a coach's answer."
Nia looked at him.
"Maybe."
He lowered his voice.
"Victor wants to meet you, if you have a minute."
Nia glanced toward the office.
"Did I do something wrong?"
"No. He just wants to welcome you properly."
"All right."
Daniel led her toward the office.
Victor stood when they entered.
"Nia. Good to see you again."
"Good evening."
He offered his hand.
She shook it.
"I'm Victor Hale. I own the place."
"I know."
Victor smiled.
"Then you've already met the important person."
Daniel laughed quietly.
Victor gestured toward a chair.
"Have a seat."
Nia sat.
