Nia thought for a moment.

“Don't crank anything. Otherwise, I'm fine.”

Brooke smiled.

“Good.”

She stepped onto the grappling section.

Nia removed her shoes and walked onto the mat.

A few members moved closer.

The atmosphere had changed.

At first, they had gathered because they expected entertainment.

Now they were watching because they were unsure what they were seeing.

Madison stood near the wall, arms folded.

Tessa watched from beside her.

Daniel knelt at the edge of the mat.

“Start from standing. Controlled pace. Work for position. No submissions finished.”

Brooke nodded.

Nia nodded.

They faced each other.

Brooke reached for a collar tie.

Nia stepped inside the grip and placed her hand against Brooke's elbow.

Brooke adjusted.

Nia changed angle.

The exchange was brief, but Brooke immediately understood that Nia was not going to offer her the usual grips.

Brooke tried again.

This time she reached for an underhook.

Nia turned her shoulder, lowered her center, and stepped away.

Brooke followed.

Nia's feet moved in a small circle.

Brooke's hands closed around empty space.

She smiled.

“Okay.”

Nia said nothing.

Brooke changed levels.

She reached for a single-leg entry.

Nia moved her hips back, controlled the shoulder, and circled away.

Brooke recovered quickly.

She had been a champion for a reason.

Her wrestling defense was excellent.

But Nia's movement was making her work harder than expected.

Brooke attempted another entry.

Nia sprawled lightly, placed her weight across Brooke's shoulders, and moved to the side.

Brooke turned to face her.

Nia released the pressure and stood.

Brooke blinked.

“You let me up.”

“We're working positions.”

“You had the angle.”

“I know.”

“Why didn't you take it?”

Nia looked at her.

“Because you were still moving.”

Brooke stared for a moment.

Then she laughed.

“That's an interesting answer.”

Daniel watched closely.

The round had barely begun, and Brooke had already been forced to abandon her preferred approach.

She was accustomed to creating pressure.

Nia was refusing to give her a stable place to apply it.

The first mistake

Brooke finally secured a collar tie and an inside grip.

She moved forward.

Nia gave ground.

Brooke followed, trying to guide her toward the edge of the mat.

The strategy was familiar.

Cut off the space.

Force the opponent to react.

Then take the position.

But Nia noticed the direction.

She stepped toward the open side.

Brooke adjusted.

Nia changed levels.

For a fraction of a second, Brooke's weight shifted forward.

Nia placed one hand against her upper arm and the other near her hip.

She turned.

Brooke's feet left the mat.

Not high.

Not violently.

Just enough for her balance to disappear.

She landed on her side with a controlled thump.

Nia released her immediately and stepped back.

The gym went quiet again.

Brooke sat up.

Her eyes moved from the mat to Nia.

“What was that?”

Nia offered her a hand.

“A turn.”

Brooke accepted it.

“That's not what I mean.”

Nia helped her stand.

“You pushed too hard through the grip.”

Brooke looked at her.

“You used my momentum.”

“Yes.”

“That's wrestling.”

“A little.”

Brooke laughed despite herself.

Madison, watching from the wall, did not laugh.

Tessa looked at Daniel.

Daniel's expression had become serious.

He had seen enough to know that Nia was not a recreational beginner with a few years of casual training.

But he still did not know how experienced she really was.

He had not asked.

And Nia had not offered.

A name on the wall

During the short break, one of the younger members approached Daniel.

“Coach?”

Daniel looked up.

“Yeah?”

“Who is she?”

Daniel glanced toward Nia.

“I don't know yet.”

“She seems really good.”

“She does.”

“Has she fought?”

Daniel watched Nia replace the cap on her water bottle.

“Probably.”

The young man looked toward the championship wall.

“Maybe she competed somewhere local.”

“Maybe.”

The member returned to his training.

Daniel stood and walked toward the office.

He wanted to check the membership information.

Not because he suspected anything improper.

Because he needed to know whether the gym had any reason to classify Nia differently from an ordinary new member.

Her waiver was in the system.

Her emergency contact information was complete.

Her training history section contained only a brief note:

Previous combat sports experience. Returning to regular training.

No gym names.

No competition records.

No coach references.

Nothing unusual.

Daniel returned to the mat.

Nia was sitting on the edge, adjusting the strap of her shoe.

“Everything okay?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“You've trained for a long time.”

“Yes.”

“Would you mind telling me where?”

Nia looked at him.

“Why?”

“So I know what kind of training you've had.”

She considered the question.

Then she said, “I spent most of my competitive years at a place called Northstar Performance Center.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“Northstar?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Outside Baltimore.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

He knew the name.

Northstar had produced several high-level athletes in different combat disciplines. It was not a large commercial gym. It had a reputation for demanding training, strong coaching, and unusually disciplined competitors.

“Who coached you?”

Nia gave him a name.

Daniel looked at her for a moment.

Then he looked toward the center of the gym.

“Interesting.”

Nia zipped her duffel.

“Is something wrong?”

“No.”

He hesitated.

“Just surprised.”

“Why?”

“Because Northstar doesn't usually send people out without a little more noise.”

Nia smiled faintly.

“I left a while ago.”

Daniel nodded.

He wanted to ask more.

But before he could, Madison approached.

“Are we finished?”

Brooke stood behind her.

Tessa joined them.

Madison looked at Nia.

“I think you owe us another round.”

Daniel immediately frowned.

“Madison.”

“What?”

“You've already had your round.”

“I mean a proper one.”

Brooke nodded.

“I'd like to continue too.”

Tessa smiled.

“And I haven't had mine.”
