Arthur stood over him, looking down with neither anger nor triumph.
"You've spent years learning how to win points in a ring, Weston," Arthur said quietly, his voice echoing in the still morning air. "You never learned what happens when someone isn't playing by your rules."
Weston stayed on his knees for two full minutes, his chest heaving as he slowly regained his breath. His friends stepped forward to help him, but Marcus held them back with an outstretched arm.
"Don't," Marcus said quietly, staring at Arthur with intense realization. "Look at his hands. Look at the scars on his forearms."
Marcus stepped forward, ignoring Weston, and approached Arthur slowly with his hands visible.
"I know that entry technique," Marcus said, his voice quiet, almost respectful. "That wasn't Krav Maga, and it wasn't Sambo. That was close-quarters combat from Special Operations. Joint manipulation, nerve strikes, momentum redirection. I had an instructor from Fort Bragg who talked about a guy who refined that system for Tier-One operators twenty years ago."
Marcus looked Arthur dead in the eye. "You're Major Arthur Hayes. Task Force 88."
Arthur didn't confirm or deny it. He simply picked up his coffee mug from the fence post and took a slow sip.
Weston, finally standing up with the support of another fighter, looked between Marcus and Arthur in total confusion. "What... what are you talking about, Marcus? He's a rancher!"
"Shut up, Weston," Marcus said sternly, turning to his employer. "You idiot. You didn't challenge some old country bumpkin. You just tried to bully a man who spent twenty years conducting high-risk counter-terrorism operations behind enemy lines. He's forgotten more about real combat than you'll ever learn in a gym."
Weston’s face drained of color. He looked at Arthur’s calm, weathered face, at the cold discipline in his gray eyes, and suddenly realized the immense danger he had walked into out of pure vanity. Had Arthur wanted to, he could have ended Weston’s life in the first three seconds of the engagement without breaking a sweat.
