A plain loaf of white sandwich bread.
He carried it to Caleb.
“Here.”
Caleb smiled.
“What's this?”
“Your debt.”
Caleb laughed.
“I think we're past that.”
Henry shook his head.
“No.”
He handed him the loaf.
“You promised you'd pay me back.”
Caleb looked at him.
“I did.”
Henry smiled.
“You finally did.”
Twenty-Six Years Later
That evening, after the celebration ended, Henry and Caleb stood alone inside the bakery.
The lights were dim.
Rain tapped against the windows.
The same kind of rain that had fallen twenty-six years earlier.
Henry looked around.
“Funny.”
“What?”
“I thought the place would feel different.”
“It does.”
“How?”
Henry smiled.
“There are no debts.”
Caleb laughed.
“There are always debts.”
“Not the ones that matter.”
They stood silently.
Caleb walked toward the wall.
The old photograph remained there.
Henry.
Teresa.
Caleb.
Three people frozen in a moment that had lasted only seconds.
Caleb touched the frame.
“My mother would have liked this.”
Henry nodded.
“I wish she'd seen it.”
“She did.”
Henry looked at him.
“What?”
Caleb smiled.
“I used to tell her everything.”
He looked at the bakery.
“She knew.”
Henry nodded slowly.
Then he asked the question he had been avoiding for years.
“Why did you really wait twenty-six years?”
Caleb thought.
“Because I needed to become someone who could come back.”
Henry frowned.
“You were always welcome.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Caleb looked at him.
“Because when I was ten, I thought rich people were people who never had to worry.”
Henry smiled.
“And now?”
“Now I know better.”
“What do you know?”
Caleb answered quietly.
“Money can build buildings.”
He looked around.
“But it can't build meaning.”
Henry nodded.
“People do that.”
“Yes.”
“And sometimes?”
“Sometimes they do it with bread.”
They both laughed.
