Caleb arrived twenty minutes later.
He stepped out of his car.
“Henry.”
Henry shook his head.
“It's over.”
“No.”
“Look at it.”
“I am.”
“We can't rebuild.”
“We can.”
“With what money?”
“I'll handle it.”
Henry turned.
“No.”
“Henry—”
“No.”
“This isn't charity.”
“I don't care what you call it.”
Henry's voice cracked.
“I can't keep taking things from you.”
Caleb stepped closer.
“You aren't taking anything.”
“I lost the bakery.”
“No.”
Henry pointed at the burned building.
“Yes.”
Caleb shook his head.
“You lost a kitchen.”
Henry stared at him.
“The bakery is people.”
He pointed toward the surviving front room.
“It's that ledger.”
He pointed toward the photographs.
“It's those families.”
Then he looked at Caleb.
“And it's you.”
Caleb's eyes filled.
“I've been trying to tell you.”
“What?”
“You gave me food when I had nothing.”
He pointed at the building.
“You didn't give me this.”
“You gave me a reason to believe people could be trusted.”
Henry looked away.
Caleb continued.
“So let me give something back.”
This time Henry didn't refuse.
Rebuilding
The rebuilding became a neighborhood project.
Local electricians donated labor.
A construction company offered materials at cost.
Former customers brought food.
Children made drawings.
The school sent thank-you cards.
A retired carpenter repaired the old wooden counter.
The photographs were cleaned and rehung.
Even Victor Lang came by once.
Henry found him standing outside.
“You're rebuilding.”
“Yes.”
Victor looked at the construction.
“Why?”
Henry shrugged.
“Because we can.”
Victor smiled.
“You know you're fighting a losing battle.”
Henry looked at him.
“Maybe.”
Victor turned away.
Then stopped.
“My father used to shop here.”
Henry looked surprised.
“He did?”
“Every Saturday.”
“What was his name?”
Victor told him.
