PART2 HOA Karen Built a Luxury Marina on My Private Shoreline — Then I Brought the Deeds to Her Grand Opening
Chapter 2
Most of the homes weren't actually on the lake.
A handful of lots touched the shoreline.
Most didn't.
That created resentment.
People had paid lake-community prices and discovered that living near the lake was not the same as owning access to it.
They wanted more.
More docks.
More boat slips.
More prestige.
More amenities.
More proof that their expensive houses were worth what they had paid.
Then Linda Holloway became president of the homeowners association.
Her last name matched the community.
She did not own the development.
But she behaved as though the entire subdivision had been named after her.
Linda was in her late fifties, with silver-blond hair, sharp cheekbones, pearls during the day, diamonds at night, and a voice that never needed to rise.
She believed people should lower themselves to hear her.
She loved words like vision, legacy, investment, prestige, value, and elevated lifestyle.
She disliked words like deed, boundary, easement, survey, and permission.
The first time I heard her name, it was in a county newsletter.
HOLLOWAY SHORES HOA ANNOUNCES WATERFRONT ENHANCEMENT VISION
There was a photograph of Linda standing beside Lake Alder with one hand resting on a rolled blueprint.
The caption described her as the driving force behind the community's next chapter.
I barely noticed.
HOAs loved visions.
Most visions died in committee.
This one didn't.
Two years later, I received a property-tax notice and decided to visit Mercer Point.
I wanted to inspect the boathouse roof and walk the shoreline.
The drive was familiar until the final mile.
Then something felt wrong.
The dirt access road was paved.
Not completely.
But enough.
Fresh asphalt covered the first section.
New gravel had been spread around the bend.
Small ornamental shrubs lined the entrance.
And a polished metal sign stood beside the road.
MARINA ACCESS
I stopped my truck.
For several seconds, I simply stared.
Then I saw Grandpa's old cedar post.
Half-rotted.
Leaning.
Still standing where he'd planted it when I was twelve.
This was my road.
Someone had changed it.
I drove toward the lake.
And when the trees opened, I saw something I could not explain.
A marina.
A huge one.
And it was sitting on my shoreline.
The Marina
Concrete walkways curved along the water.
Fresh pilings disappeared into the lake.
Two enormous docks stretched outward.
Dozens of boat slips lined both sides.
Electrical pedestals stood beside them.
Water hookups had been installed.
Black security cameras watched the docks.
A coded gate controlled access.
Decorative stone walls surrounded a new parking area.
Landscapers were spreading mulch where wild grass had grown for decades.
Workers in yellow vests were installing railings.
And between two polished posts hung a giant banner.
