“Today is the day we turn vision into reality.”

The crowd applauded.

She spoke about perseverance.

Leadership.

Property values.

Community.

Children learning to love the lake.

Neighbors coming together.

She spoke about the residents who had believed in her dream.

She thanked sponsors.

She thanked contractors.

She thanked the board.

But she didn't mention the engineer.

She didn't mention the title search.

She didn't mention the boundary problem.

She didn't mention the deed.

And she certainly didn't mention my grandfather.

Then she smiled wider.

“This marina belongs to all of us.”

Marisol touched Daniel's arm.

“Now.”

We walked forward.

Slowly.

No shouting.

No dramatic confrontation.

The paperwork was enough.

Linda noticed us.

Her smile tightened.

Daniel approached the stage.

He spoke quietly.

I couldn't hear his first sentence.

But I heard Linda answer.

“This can wait.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No, ma'am.”

The microphone caught it.

The crowd heard.

Linda glanced toward the audience.

“Just a small administrative matter.”

Marisol handed the HOA attorney a folder.

He opened it.

His face changed immediately.

The whispers began.

“What happened?”

“Why is the county here?”

“Is there a permit problem?”

“What's going on?”

Linda tried to continue.

“We will proceed with the ribbon cutting in just a moment.”

Daniel stepped toward the microphone.

“The county cannot participate in the opening of this facility until ownership and authorization issues are resolved.”

The words landed hard.

A boat dealer lowered his sponsor banner.

A real estate agent whispered one word.

“Ownership?”

Linda's voice sharpened.

“This project has been approved for years.”

Daniel held up the deed.

“The recorded owner of this parcel is Ethan Mercer.”

I stepped forward.

The crowd turned.

Linda looked at me.

For the first time, her confidence cracked.

“You.”

“Yes.”
