PART2 The HOA Declared My Garage Illegal — They Had No Idea I Had the Original Records
Chapter 1
The Morning the House Went Dark
My refrigerator went silent first.
Then the air conditioner clicked off.
Finally, the small desk lamp in my father's old study went dark.
I stood in the kitchen, listening to the sudden silence.
There was no hum from the vents. No compressor kicking on. No quiet electrical vibration that you never notice until it disappears.
Outside, a white utility truck was parked at the curb.
Two workers from Consolidated Power Services were packing their tools beside the meter box.
One of them handed me a work order.
"Safety complaint," he said.
I read it.
"Electrical hazard."
I looked up.
"Based on what inspection?"
The older worker avoided my eyes.
"We have an order to disconnect service."
"Who requested it?"
He hesitated.
"The homeowners association."
I looked across the street.
Melissa Carter stood at the end of her driveway.
She was watching me.
And she was smiling.
"I hope you understand now, Marcus," she called.
"Understand what?"
"This is what happens when a homeowner refuses to cooperate with the community."
Her voice was pleasant.
Almost warm.
That made it worse.
I looked at the work order again.
There was no inspection report.
No photograph.
No electrical citation.
No municipal code.
No signature from a licensed electrician.
Just a disconnection order based on a complaint from Cedarfield Estates HOA.
I didn't argue.
I didn't threaten Melissa.
I took photographs.
The truck.
The meter.
The disconnected seal.
The work order.
Melissa standing across the street.
Then I went inside.
I opened my father's old fireproof safe.
And pulled out files I had hoped never to need again.
Because Melissa Carter had just made a very serious mistake.
She had picked the wrong house.
