The board voted.

Every violation issued against me after the fence dispute began was rescinded.

My survey costs were reimbursed.

Reasonable attorney fees related to the HOA's mishandling were covered.

Denise was ordered to remove or relocate the fence within fourteen days.

Her enforcement authority was suspended pending an investigation.

Denise sat motionless through every vote.

When the final decision passed, she stood.

“I have given years to this neighborhood.”

Grace looked at her.

“And tonight, this neighborhood is taking six feet back.”

The room erupted.

Denise gathered her papers.

For once, she didn't have a response.

Nine days later, the fence came down.

The same contractor returned.

But this time, he worked quietly.

Panels were removed.

Posts were pulled.

Concrete was dug out.

The irrigation line was capped.

The roses were removed.

The stone path disappeared.

The Adirondack chairs were carried away.

I watched from my driveway.
