Strangers on My Property

The breaking point came on a Friday afternoon.

I came home early and saw two men in orange vests near the shoreline.

They were carrying measuring equipment.

Vanessa stood beside them with a clipboard.

She was on my property.

I walked down toward the lake.

"Why are you here?"

"We're conducting a shoreline assessment."

"I didn't authorize that."

"The HOA has a responsibility to inspect violations."

"You have a responsibility to stay off private property unless invited."

The two men looked uncomfortable.

Vanessa didn't.

"This concerns a community matter."

"This isn't community land."

"That remains disputed."

"No," I said. "It remains ignored."

She narrowed her eyes.

"You have been given multiple opportunities to comply."

"And you've been given multiple documents proving you have no authority here."

She stepped closer.

"Your refusal to cooperate is exactly why enforcement must proceed."

I took out my phone.

"Then let's make sure we're clear."

I started recording.

Her expression changed.

"What are you doing?"

"Documenting this."

"This isn't trespass."

"Did I give you permission to enter my property?"

She said nothing.

I turned to the men.

"Who hired you?"

"The HOA."

"Did anyone tell you this property was disputed?"

One of them looked at Vanessa.

"No, sir."

"Did anyone show you a court order or county authorization?"

"No, sir."

Vanessa snapped, "They don't need a court order for an HOA inspection."

I looked at her.

"They do if the HOA has no inspection rights here."

Her cheeks flushed.

"You will regret refusing to resolve this."

I lowered my phone slightly.

"Vanessa, you're standing on land you don't control, threatening rights you don't understand, over records you haven't read."

Her jaw tightened.

"Are you finished?"

"Not even close."

That evening, I sent the video to Dana.

Fifteen minutes later, she replied:

Good.

Then:

Do not delete that.

The following Monday, Vanessa made the mistake that changed everything.

She filed a formal complaint with the county.
