“That isn't what I asked.”

Karen looked toward the gate.

“I will not be interrogated on the roadside.”

“You came to my gate,” I said.

She glared.

“My residents are being inconvenienced.”

“Your residents can use public roads.”

“That adds eight minutes.”

“Then they should leave eight minutes earlier.”

Peter covered his mouth.

I could see him trying not to laugh.

Karen saw it too.

And that was the first real crack.

The board began asking questions.

Why had she told residents the road was under HOA review?

Why had she continued using it after receiving legal notice?

Why had she called it emergency access?

Why hadn't she shown the board an easement?

Her answers became vague.

Her confidence remained.

But the foundation underneath it was disappearing.

The Deputy

Two days later, Karen called the sheriff.

A deputy named Marsh arrived at my house after lunch.

“We received a complaint about a blocked access road.”

I handed him my file.

Deed.

Survey.

County confirmation.

Title policy.

Photographs.

Notice letter.

Certified receipt.

Gate invoice.

Emergency access documentation.

He read everything carefully.

Then he looked toward the gate.

“This is your road?”

“Yes.”

“No easement?”

“No.”

“No court order?”

“No.”

“Shared maintenance agreement?”
